Standards and objectives
  • SSUSH8 The student will explain the relationship
    between growing north-south divisions and
    westward expansion.
  • Students should be able to explain the events
    that led Americans to Spanish Texas, why those
    Americans revolted and why Texas became the
    lonestar republic.
  • Students should be able to state why the US and
    Mexico went to war and what James K. Polks role
    was in that war.

Spanish lands
  • Spain controls area of modern day SW USA
  • 21 Spanish presidios were setup in the Area (I.E.
    San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tempe,
    Tuscon, San Antonio)
  • Tried to convert Indians and generally treated
    them harshly.
  • WHAT WAS A PRESIDIO?

Mexican Independence
  • In 1821 after a 13 year struggle, Mexico claims
    its independence from Spain.
  • Mexico attempts to take over their missionaries.
  • Since missionaries have become centers of trade
    and they have become allied with US, many
    missionaries are raided and destroyed when Mexico
    attempts takeover
  • A form of anti-Mexico feelings sweep area

    treaty declaring Texas free on April, 21 1836.

    that led to the treaty?

Texas annexation
  • Texas begs the US to annex them.
  • Santa Ana says if the US annexes TEXAS than the
    US will be declaring war on Mexico.
  • In 1845 Congress approves Texan annexation.
  • Why could Congress not agree on annexation?

RIO GRANDE OR NUECES?
  • The US recognizes the Rio Grande river as the
    border between the two countries.
  • The Mexicans regard the Nueces river to be the
    border between the two countries.
  • Polk sends troops to protect the border
  • Santa Ana says the US has invaded Mexico and then
    attacks the US soldiers!

Battle Begins
  • In 1846 US troops are attacked and President Polk
    pushes for war.
  • May 13, 1846 war is declared.
  • US invades Mexico from West and SE Texas and push
    deep into the heart of the country and take the
    capital within a few months.

Bear Flag revolt
  • Word spreads to US forces in the Oregon territory
    about the onset of war within 2 weeks.
  • US forces march into northern California and
    begin to fly US flags over abandoned Spanish
    forts.
  • Who was fighting who in the Bear Flag Revolt and
    how is this related to the US Mexico war? Who
    was Freemont and what was his role?
