3
Who is the Tollund Man
  • Tollund Man is a German slave who was sacrificed
about 2200 years ago. In 1950 he was found at a
peat bog in Tollund, Denmark. Tollund Man comes
from the Iron age and died around 350 BC.

4
Description of Tollund Man
  • He wore a leather cap on his head, and around his
neck he wore a rope noose and an iron neck ring.
The Tollund Man is 161cm tall which is very small
even in his time. Fingerprints and foot sole
patterns indicate that the Tollund Man is like
those of modern men. Two scars on his foot show
that he must have walked barefoot most of his
life. Tollund man was clean shaven and his hair
    was cut short.

5
What archaeologist have learned from the Tollund
man
  • Archaeologists have learned that the Tollund man
didnt die of old age but he was a sacrificial
victim. The way in which he may have died is that
he was hung, the rope around his neck shows this.

6
Map showing where Tollund man was found
Tollund man was found in the small village of
Tollund. In that village he was found in a peat
bog.
7
How and when the Tollund man was found
This is the bottom view of how they found the
Tollund man.
This is the top view of how they found the
Tollund man.
  • Emil and Viggo Hojgard were digging in a peat bog
in Tollund Fen Denmark 1950. They found a body,
which had peat all over it. This body was found
in the same position as the view in the far left
picture. The best preserved bog body came to be
    named the Tollund man.

8
How and when the Tollund man died
  • The Tollund man was believed not to die of old
age or disease. This was for the reason that his
heart and other organs were healthy. There is
some evidence that shows a way he may have died.
He was killed as a sacrifice because he was a
German slave who washed the cart and Earth
Goddess of Spring Statue. The evidence of his
death is that he had eaten soup made up of seeds,
which were connected to Spring. He ate this soup
about 12 hours before his death when he died it
was around Spring. A rope around his neck might
show that he was hung. Carbon-14 dating shows
that he died around 350 BC, i.e. early iron age.
His age was around 40 when he died.

9
Conclusion
  • In conclusion we would like to say that the
Tollund man has given archaeologists as well as
scientist a taste of the past. We hope after
viewing this presentation you have learned a lot
    more about the Tollund man.
