1From Textbooks to Courseware The
transformation of teaching and learning materials
in engineering education
- Dan Sayre
- John Wiley Sons, Inc.
- February 2011
2Technology Can Improve Learning
- Students who took all or part of their class
online performed better, on average, than those
taking the same course through traditional
face-to-face instruction. - Department of Education
- Evaluation of Evidence-Based Practices In Online
Learning - May 2009
3The Context for Digital Learning
- Institutional Pressures
- Increasing access to education
- Student growth US 20 projected increase 2000 to
2015 - Drives 10 annual growth in US online students
- Emphasis on accountability and demonstrated
outcomes - Student Needs
- Accessibility mobility (anytime, anywhere)
- Multiple demands on time and location
- Inconsistent academic and personal preparation
for college - Cost of Education
- Faculty, facilities
- Cost of materials, equipment
- The price of texts
4Constraints on traditional instruction
- Only half of first year students actually discuss
their grades/assignments with their instructors - One in five frequently come to class without
completing readings or assignments - 40 say they do not receive prompt feedback from
instructors - Study hours are only half what instructors think
students need to succeed - Less than half of entering freshmen will complete
a degree by year 6
5revolution in digital information delivery
- Two of the most popular devices, iPad and Kindle,
have shipped more than 3 million units each, and
industry estimates project that as many as 12
to15 million iPads will be in use by the end of
2012. - In July 2010, Amazons sales of digital books
outsold print books for the second quarter of the
year.
6Digital textbooks more than text
- Early experiments using textbooks on the Kindle
proved disappointing to students and professors,
who cited presentation of images and color, file
storage and location, page refresh and skimming,
highlighting and annotation, and reading for
comprehension as limitations.
