Title: Boilers

1
Boilers
  • By Jason Ng

2
Objectives
  • Effectively compare and contrast different types
of water heating systems in order to enlighten
students about proper choice making when it comes
to choosing a heating system for a home.

3
Selection Criteria
  • Types of water heaters
  • Conventional Storage
  • Demand water heaters
  • Heat Pumps
  • Solar Water heaters-----------?
  • Tankless coil or Indirect heaters
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Fuel types
  • Size

4
Tankless Coil Water Heaters
  • Provides hot water on demand, without a tank
  • Works most efficiently during cold months
  • Energy is wasted during warm months

5
Indirect Water Heaters
  • Storage tank required
  • Allows boiler to work less often
  • More efficient for homes
  • Works well with radiant floor heating systems

6
Fuel Cost Comparison Chart
Estimated Annual Heating Cost for Selected Fuels Estimated Annual Heating Cost for Selected Fuels Estimated Annual Heating Cost for Selected Fuels
Heating Efficiency Fuel Cost Energy use/1500ft2 Energy Cost for a well insulated 1500ft2 home
Electric Resistance 3413Btu/kWh 100 0.03/kWh 23440kWh 703.20
Propane 92000Btu/gal 92 0.90/gal 945gal 850.50
Natural Gas 100000Btu/therm 92 0.70/therm 870therms 609.00
7
Efficiency Rating Energy Factor (EF)
  • EF based on
  • Recovery efficiency
  • Stand by losses
  • Cycling losses
  • Higher EF Higher Efficiency
  • Higher EF does not necessarily mean lower costs

8
Conclusion
  • After having listened and comprehended the
information presented, one should now have enough
understanding of water heating systems in order
to make an informed decision about what kind of
systems to use for different needs
