Title: Unit 4 Ch. 8 Study Guide

1
Unit 4 Ch. 8 Study Guide
  • The Great Lake States
  • Test

2
Basic Information
  • Multiple choice!

3
Marquette and Joliet explored the Great Lakes
region to try and find the Mississippi River.
4
Fighting over ownership of the Ohio River valley
lead to the French and Indian War.
5
The Northwest Territory includes the lands west
of the Pennsylvania and east of the Mississippi
River, it was divided into townships and sold to
settlers, and included the lands north of the
Ohio River and south of the Great Lakes. It was
not however the first area where the French built
settlements.
6
The United States decided to survey the Northwest
Territory to better plan for the settlement of
the territory.
7
The Great Lakes formed as a result of glaciers.
8
The Illinois Waterway and the Illinois River
connect Lake Michigan with the Mississippi River.
9
Steel mills were built along the Great Lakes
because both iron ore and coal were found in
nearby states.
10
Most manufactured goods today are made on
assembly lines.
11
A keelboat, steamboat, and barge could travel
upstream against a river's current. A flatboat
could not.
12
In the Northwest Territory, one section in each
township was set aside for a school.
13
Vocabulary Fill in
  • Know these words!

14
An ordinance is a set of laws.
15
Settlers on the frontier were often surrounded by
wilderness.
16
Ore is rock that contains one or more kinds of
minerals.
17
The world's first skyscraper was built in Chicago
in 1885.
18
Goods shipped on rivers are often called freight.
19
A barge is a flat-bottomed boat used mostly on
rivers and other inland waterways.
20
MAKE A THOUGHTFUL DECISION
  • Pick two out of the four! If you do all four,
    you may earn bonus points!

21
Listed below are four decisions people have made
during the history of the Great Lakes region.
Choose any two and in an answer for each one,
explain the consequences (results) of that
decision.
22
1. In 1673, French leaders in what is today
Canada decided to send an expedition to explore
the areas south of the Great Lakes.
French traders moved to the Great Lakes region,
set up trading posts that later became towns and
cities.
23
2. The United States government decided to sell
land in the Northwest Territory for as little as
a dollar per acre.
Many people moved to the NW Territory in hopes of
buying their own land.
24
3. Automobile manufacturers decided to use mass
production in their factories.
Cars could be produced faster and cheaper, which
made the industry grow!
25
4. People decided to build locks and dams along
the Mississippi River in the Great Lakes region.
Navigation on the Mississippi improved, which
helped trade and industry grow!
26
Bring your river chart to class for the test!
27
ESSAY
28
1 a one-paragraph essay (made up of at least 4
sentences), answer the following question (there
are two parts).
29
1.Mass production and the assembly line were two
important developments in American industry. In a
one-paragraph essay, explain what they are AND
why they are important.
30
  • Mass production isA way of manufacturing in
which many items that are identical can be made
    quickly and cheaply.
  • Assembly line is A line of workers and machines
along which a product moves as it is put together
    one step at a time.
  • They helped to make products cheaper and faster
so more people could afford to buy the products.
