Heian Period (794-1185)
  • Rise of Fujiwara family
  • Used marriage to gain position with Emperor
  • During this time Emperor became almost completely
    ceremonial
  • Court life revolved around ceremony
  • Stressed beauty and manners
  • Rules of paper folding, clothing, eating,
    cosmetics
  • Famous work of literature Tale of the Genji
  • First novel, tells of court life
  • Heian fall to in-fighting between clans

Japanese Feudalism
  • Aristocrats rebelled and began own fortresses
  • warrior class not court nobles dominate society
  • Goverments called Bakufu Tent government
  • Japan, under Emperor, broke into small fiefs
    led by bushi (local lords)
  • Samurai (warriors) served bushi and sometimes
    emperor
  • Samurai honor code bushido
  • included practice of seppuku
  • suicide by dishonored warriors to keep family
    honor
  • Japanese peasants turned into serfs bound to the
    land

Shogunate
  • 13th and 14th C. power in hands of powerful
    families who had military leaders called shoguns
  • Civil unrest led to this weakening, by 1477 Japan
    broken into 300 small kingdoms, each ruled by a
    warlord called a daimyo
  • trade began
  • taxes collected for public works
  • guilds rose

  • Chinese influence began in 4th C. BCE
  • Buddhism Chinese writing
  • Civil service exams
  • Traded with China
  • Tang took over, then allowed Korea limited rule
    with payment of tribute
  • Mongols took Korea in 1200s and ended contact
    with China until 1392

  • Conquered by Han (paid tribute)
  • Often rebelled against China, gained independence
    from Tang in 907
  • Still kept many Chinese traditions
