King Edward
  • He reigned from 1042, until his death in 1066.
  • He was known as Edward the Confessor.
  • Edward is considered a patron saint by the
    Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Church.
  • He was also an Anglo-Saxon ruler.
  • He died and had no heir.

Harold Godwinson
  • He claimed that King Edward had promised him the
    crown on his deathbed.
  • He was the last crowned Anglo-Saxon king.
  • The only relation to King Edward was that he was
    the kings brother-in-law and high advisor
  • He ruled during the battle of Hastings, which is
    from Jan. 5, 1066 to Oct. 14, 1066.

William, Duke of Normandy
  • He ruled as the Duke of Normandy from 1035-1087.
    And was King of England from1066-1087.
  • He started the Norman Conquest which dealt with
    English revolts.

What happened way back when?
  • Harthacut made deal with Mangus that he could be
    King of England if Harthacut died and had no
    heir.
  • Harthacut died on July 5, 1047, but Mangus could
    not be king because he was dead, so his son
    claimed that he was next in line to take the
    throne.
  • Harald said that since his father made the deal,
    he should be the new king.

Harald Hardrada
  • He wanted his part of a deal that his father had
    made in the past.
  • Harald had sworn he would win the war and be
    king.
  • The Battle of Hastings is where Harald Hardrada
    had lost his life.

Why did this happen?
  • It occurred because King Edward had passed on and
    three people wanted to be king of England.
  • The throne was rightfully passed on to the
    kings brother-in-law.
  • Also, two others had claimed their right to the
    throne due to relations to the king.
