Title: Investigate technologies designed to reduce the negative consequences of other technologies.

1
Objectives
  • Investigate technologies designed to reduce the
    negative consequences of other technologies.
  • Research and report on processes (reusing,
reducing, and recycling) that conserve water,
    soil, and energy.
  • Assess the effectiveness of the use of technology
    to monitor environmental conditions.
  • Explain that changes in society caused by the use
of technology can range from gradual to rapid and
    from subtle to obvious.
  • Refine and extend comprehension skills by
selecting, reading, analyzing and evaluating a
variety of print and electronic texts about
products and systems. (VSC Reading Comprehension
    /Informational Texts)
  • Collect information and evaluate its quality.

2
The Big Idea
  • Knowledge of the history of technology helps
people understand the world around them by seeing
how people of all times and places have increased
their capability by using their unique skills to
    innovate, improvise and invent.

3
Technologies influence on History
  • Popular Literature often deals with the
development of technology and its influence on
    history.

4
Your Turn...
  • In your opinion, why is there a market for this
    type of literature?
  • Thinking about these three books, what do you
feel is the educational background of the authors?

5
Your Turn...
  • Investigate and share with the class a technology
designed to reduce the negative consequences of
    other technologies.
  • Focus your investigation on processes (reusing,
reducing, and recycling) that conserve water,
    soil, and energy.

Researching
  • Conduct a literature review
  • This an account of what has been published on a
topic by accredited scholars and researchers.
  • The purpose is to inform others about what
knowledge and ideas already exist related to the
    topic.
  • Besides enhancing knowledge about the topic,
writing a literature review enables you to gain
and demonstrate skills in two areas
  • a) information seeking the ability to scan the
    literature efficiently, using manual or
computerized methods, to identify a set of useful
    articles and books
  • b) critical appraisal the ability to apply
principles of analysis to identify unbiased and
    valid studies.

7
Literature Reviews
  • Literature review should do these things
  • Be organized around and related directly to the
thesis or research question being developed
  • Synthesize results into a summary of what is and
    is not known
  • Identify areas of controversy in the literature
  • Formulate questions that need further research

8
Go take a look...
  • Use the Internet to find current literature
dealing with the development of technology.
  • http//book.google.com is a good place to look
  • Find and briefly summarize a review for a current
    book on a technology.
  • Should be a topic you find interesting.
  • Present a brief summary to the class.
  • Title, Author, publisher, date, what the book
    is about.
  • How did the technology change history.

9
Your Assignment
  • Create a research report on a specific
technological advancement and how it changed
    history
  • The purposes of research
  • Is the development of an information base used to
understand the influence of technology on
    history.

10
Step by step
  • Research techniques
  • Select a topic
  • Research the topic
  • Taking notes
  • Collect data, graphs, and analysis
  • Write a rough draft
  • Complete a written report
  • Prepare an oral presentation
  • Present an oral report

11
Say more with Graphs
  • Use of mathematical models for making
    predictions.

Does the use of a graph say more?
12
Your Research Report should follow this format.
Title Page Table of Contents Summary One
paragraph-it should be clear and concise.
Introduction Give background information and
set the scene. Body The reasons behind the
need for the thing you are reporting on. The
scientific principles behind the item. Design
Sketches and or pictures (with titles and
labels). Explanation of how the item was tested
and any improvements that have been made over
time. Any problems that have been reported in
designing and building of the item. How did
they designers solve these problems? Conclusions
(and Recommendations) Bibliography
13
Your Presentation should be...
  • A summary to the class about what you researched.
  • Should use bullets to introduce ideas
  • Keep text to two lines per bullet
  • Keep font at least 24
  • Use a high contrast between text and background
  • Try to say more with a picture or graph
  • Create presentation first then go back to add
    special effects
  • Remember that too many special effects will
    detract from the presentation
