1
  • Family Medicine is the discipline of choice
for the nurse who welcomes the challenge of a
variety of patient conditions and wants the
rewarding experience of caring for people in the
context of their families and communities.

2
  • Family medicine education prepares you to provide
comprehensive primary care for people in all
stages of the life cycle. Emphasis is placed on
    health promotion, disease prevention, patient
    education, family-oriented care and the
    behavioral sciences.

3
  • Nurse practitioners, physician assistants and
    registered dietitians these types of
specialists in nursing are educated in family
    practicing for nurses.

4
  • WHAT IS A PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT (PA) AND WHAT IS A
    FAMILY NURSE PRACTITIONER (FNP)?

5
  • A primary care physician assistant or a family
nurse practitioner is an individual working with
a physician in a primary care setting to provide
a team approach to patient care. He/she has been
trained to assess the health status of a patient,
deliver preventive care, counsel patients on
psychosocial and health problems, diagnose and
treat common minor illnesses, and manage stable
    chronic illnesses.

6
  • FNP/PA are working with physicians and other
health workers in a variety of settings, such as
private practices, community clinics and county
hospitals, seeing an average of 25 patients per
    day.

7
  • WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN FNP AND A
PA?An FNP comes from a nursing background while
a PA generally has a different health career
background. Their respective fields have quite
different origins and histories. They operate
under different state laws and titles. However,
their roles in the health field can be similar.

8
  • Nurse practitioners are advanced practice nurses
who use theory, research, and clinical expertise
to improve the health of people of all ages. As a
health care provider, the nurse practitioner may

Nursing/Family Nurse Practitioner Training
  • The healthcare system is gradually changing.
People are starting to lose access to doctors
because of the prohibitive costs involved. Due
largely to the ever increasing costs of
    healthcare, family nurse practitioners are
becoming responsible for more and more of the
daily medical needs of families. Nurse
practitioners can be trained to perform many of
the more minor procedures that doctors once
performed. Because they are paid much less than
    doctors, a nurse practitioner's involvement in a
family's medical needs can cause the ultimate
bill to the family and usually their health
insurance company to decrease. What this means
for those that are looking to become nurse
practitioner's is generally a relatively higher
wage. This increased nursing responsibility has
made the job of a nurse practitioner more
lucrative. For this reason, there is more
incentive than ever for people to earn nursing
    degrees.
