• Bacterial structure and function are closely
  related
•  
• As single cell organisms, cells are not
  specialized
•  
• Each cell has flagella to serve as transportation
•  
• The DNA is not enclosed in a separate membrane
  because bacteria's main functions are focused
  around the DNA information

•  Bacteria first replicate genetic material (they
  replicate the DNA found in the nucleoid)

• Bacteria divides using binary fission, an asexual
  process
•  a single cell divides, becomes 2 cells, those
  divide, become 4 cells, etc.

Reproduction of Bacteria

•   Variation in bacteria comes from mutations
• Those that help the organism survive better
  allowing the organism to reproduce more so the
  mutation will be passed on
•  
• In ideal conditions, such as a lab, bacteria can
  multiply rapidly
•  
•    1 division every 20 minutes
•  
• Much slower in natural environment
•  
•    1 division can take as much as 12 hours
