The Need
  • Many schools and communities lack the vision and
a cohesive philosophy to make the right decisions
    regarding telecommunications in education.
  • Students need to be prepared to live and work in
    a new world.
  • More adults can identify the Three Stooges than
    the branches of government.

The Recently Flattened World
Is this the Sputnik of the 21st century?
9
Why Use ?
  • The nature of our government, that is
something you have to learn. It just isn't handed
    down in the genetic pool."
  • -Sandra Day O Conner quoted in USA Today.
  • These are familiar ideas that the community can
understand and are more likely to support

The Bill of Digital Rights for Students
  • http//staffdev.henrico.k12.va.us/morrisjj/bdr/

11
Freedom of Digital Speech
  • Students have the right to utilize
telecommunication tools in learning and as part
of a larger school community that interacts using
    such tools.

from
  • Employers identify applied skills they want for
their employees, and they have said that our high
school graduates are not fully prepared in, along
    with other categories,
  • Oral and Written Communication
  • Teamwork and Collaboration
  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
  • Information Technology Application
  • Ethics and Social Responsibility

Schools need to use Natives skills and
tendencies.
  • 1/2 of all teens and 57 of teens who use the
internet could be considered Content Creators.
They have created a blog or webpage, posted
original artwork, photography, stories or videos
online or remixed online content into their own
    new creations.
  • from Pew Internet and American Life Project 2005

14
In Addition
  • Todays average college grads have spent less
than 5,000 hours of their lives reading, but over
10,000 hours playing video games (not to mention
20,000 hours watching TV). Computer games,
email, the Internet, cell phones and instant
messaging are integral parts of their
    lives. Marc Prensky

Informal to formal communications combine with a
reading and writing across the curriculum program
(RWAC) to enhance learning.
  • Thoughts are not merely expressed in words they
    come into being through them.
  • Lev Vygotsky

  • Which RWAC strategies can be enhanced?

Freedom of Digital Speech
  • Students have the right to utilize
telecommunication tools in learning and as part
of a larger school community that interacts using
    such tools.

21
What does the Literature Say?
  • Studies imply that publishing writing is
correlated with higher performance levels of
    writing.
  • Cotton (1988) states that Sommers Collins
    (1984), Smith (1982), Glattorn (1981), and
Wesdorp (1983) have found that student motivation
and writing achievement are enhanced when student
work is published for a larger audience other
than the teacher. The vast majority of students
published works are self-published classroom or
    school booklets, magazines, newspapers,
    calendars, and so forth.
  • Not only does publication encourage students to
write by creating purpose and vision, but it also
serves to improve writing skills. This is
accomplished by encouraging students to revise
and put forth greater overall effort.

Some Examples
  • Short class assignment on blog http//byrdmiddle.o

  • A school newspaper website http//silverchips.mbhs
    .edu/
  • Morning announcements podcasts http//www.podcastd
    irectory.com/podshows/168625
  • Artwork scanned or photographed and put online
    http//art2know.com/

23
Publishing Between Classes
  • Ideal for across the curriculum projects.
Imagine a wiki drama on the life of Galileo.
  • Social studies scenes about the history and
    politics involved.
  • Math scenes explaining formulas of his work with
    figures and diagrams.
  • Science action scenes of his experiments,
comparing them to the scientific method.
  • English edit, revise, organize, and format the
    work for production.

24
Among Communities
  • E-mail experts or ePals create and publish web
pages, newsletters, and blogs make calls with
    VoIP

Would this happen in your school? Four students
doing a report on local water quality. They set
up and have a conference call with the county
water commissioner?

Extra-Curricular Activities What the Literature
Says
  • Adolescents who participated in greater numbers
    of structured extracurricular activities reported
higher school satisfaction. Journal of Youth and
    Adolescence, 2004
  • total participation was significantly and
favorably related to 17 of 22 senior and
postsecondary outcomes (e.g., social and academic
    self-concept, educational aspirations, coursework
    selection, homework, absenteeism, academic
    achievement, and subsequent college attendance).
    Herbert W. Marsh
  • Amount of participation was positively related to
    academic achievement. The relationship was
stronger for white students overall, and for
school-related activities for both groups. Susan
    Gerber

27
  • Our schools would benefit from communities that
are as blind to race, economic status,
    neighborhood, and complexion as online
    communities.

28
  • What kind of groups should students be allowed to
    assemble?

Groups such Fellowship of Christian Athletes and
Gay Straight Alliance can easily have resources
without the sponsorship that can be controversial
and illegal.
29
  • If we allowed prayer in schools, students
wouldnt need to take religious holidays.
  • --Stephen Colbert

30
How do we protect kids?
  • Internet Safety programs
  • Limit Free Speech
  • Secure Student Environments

31
Secure Student Environments
  • Are protected by firewalls and filters.
  • Allow administrators and teachers to view all
    student writings
  • Do not allow students to erase or delete anything
  • Link author to all writings and communications
  • Have software that censors and reports
    inappropriate words
  • Allow users to report abuse
  • Have vigilant, human administrator(s)

32
Inside the firewall or outside the firewall?
  • Document exchange system
  • Document storage system
  • Chat rooms
  • Message boards
  • Parent communication portal
  • School publications
  • Teacher blogs

School/Parent Connection
  • Parents need to understand the benefits and the
dangers of technology use in schools and at home.
  • Schools must assure parents that the most is
being made of the investments in technology and
at the same time that everything reasonable is
being done to keep students safe and secure.
