  • Consult CIHR website for full eligibility details
    (www.cihr.ca)
  • By application deadline
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Have completed or be in last year of Bachelor's
    degree, OR
  • Have been registered no more than ten months as
    full-time student in Master's program, OR
  • Have been registered no more than ten months as
    full-time PhD student admitted directly from
    Bachelors
  • If applying through McGill, be registered (in any
    capacity)

  • Applying for support for 1st graduate degree
    (i.e., Master's or PhD)
  • All previous studies at the graduate level,
    regardless of discipline, either course-based or
    research-based, will be included in determining
    eligibility
  • Have not held, or currently hold, award from
    federal source (e.g. SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR) to
    undertake and/or complete a Master's
  • Have achieved first-class average (as defined by
    your university) in each of last two years of
    full-time study (or equivalent, if part-time).
  • At McGill, first class A- or 3.70 GPA

Doctoral Applicant Basic Eligibility Requirements

  • Application deadline October 15, 2012 (directly
    to CIHR)
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • By application deadline, have completed a minimum
    of 12 months of graduate study (Masters or PhD
    level)
  • Be applying for support for full-time doctoral
    research training
  • Have not held, or currently hold, a doctoral
    award from federal sources (i.e. CIHR, NSERC,
    SSHRC or Vanier)

If applicant... ... then the maximum amount of time applicant can be registered as a full-time student in a PhD program, as of the application deadline, is
holds a Master's degree 22 months
has completed 12 months or more in a Master's degree program prior to transferring to a PhD program 22 months
has completed less than 12 months in a Master's degree program prior to transferring to a PhD program 30 months
has transferred directly from a Bachelor's degree to a PhD program (with no time in a Master's program) 34 months

Masters and Doctoral Application Policies
  • At the time of application, applicant does not
    have to be assured admission to a particular
    university or to a degree program
  • Applicant can only submit one application per
    year to either SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR
  • Applying to multiple funding agencies may result
    in a cancelled application
  • If unsure which agency to apply to, contact
    agencies with research proposal before applying

Masters and Doctoral Required Documents -
Transcripts
  • Order transcripts ASAP
  • Transcripts from all levels of post-secondary
    education are required, including transfer
    credits
  • McGill transcripts (even if no grades show)
    order through Minerva (must have no holds)
  • Can be picked up at Service Point, or mailed to
    you
  • Canadian and US transcripts order from
    university
  • Overseas transcripts request through your McGill
    department
  • Reminder you must upload transcripts to
    ResearchNet before application can be submitted

Reference Letters
  • Request Reference Letters ASAP
  • Confirm with referees Referees submit letters on
    ResearchNet, AND send hard-copy to department (or
    you) in sealed envelope
  • Application cannot be submitted until referees
    have submitted letters on ResearchNet
  • Completed by two referees able to assess
    potential one should be most recent research
    supervisor, if applicable
  • Provide the template CIHR Sponsors Assessment
    for a Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) -
    Masters Award
  • Tip Provide referees with pre-addressed
    envelopes marked TIME SENSITIVE, with required
    date indicated

Signatures
  • Definitions Research institution is the
    institution student is affiliated with.
    Institution paid is where the funds are
    disbursed (i.e. the funding agency gives
    institution money, they pay student award)
  • If applicant has not yet been accepted into
    program at time of application, no signatures
    required
  • if applicant is enrolled in program, or is
    accepted to program and has secured a supervisor,
    the Supervisor(s), Authorized Official at the
    Institution Paid and Authorized Official at the
    Institution Where the Research will be Conducted
    must provide a  signature (even if both
    institutions are the same).

  • If McGill is the research institution or
    institution paid, requires GPS fellowships
    officers signature
  • Note forms may be scanned and emailed to
    graduatefunding.gps_at_mcgill.ca
  • If a hospital is the research institution or
    institution paid, requires signature from
    Director of the Department where student will be
    conducting research

  • Printed complete application package with
    supporting documents (number of copies required
    to be determined by department)
  • Transcripts (can be copies)
  • 2 letters from referees in sealed envelopes (if
    referees did not send to department)

Oct. 15, 2012 Doctoral students submit ResearchNet application to CIHR on ResearchNet
Nov. 1, 2012 Masters students registered at McGill (at time of application) submit application on ResearchNet
Check with Department Masters students submit printed application to department
Feb. 1, 2013 Masters students NOT registered at any Canadian University submit application directly to CIHR
