    identified and non-identified population

  • 6th,7th and 8th grade in three multiage teams
  • Heterogeneously grouped in most classes
  • Departmentalized 5th grade
  • Each team has a reading and a language arts
    teacher

A Brief History of Barrington Middle Schools
Multiage Program
  • First 6th, 7th, 8th multiage team piloted in 2001
  • Second 6th, 7th, 8th multiage team created in
    2003
  • Final 6th, 7th, 8th multiage team created in 2004

  • Continuous improvement
  • Depth of relationships
  • Longer view for skills improvement
  • Reduces discipline problems
  • Students are more accepting of each other
  • Creates a smooth transition to high school

Brief History of Reading Instruction
  • Reading as a core subject piloted in 2000 and
    adopted school-wide in 2002
  • Learn to Read by Reading adopted in all grades in
    2002
  • Multiage teams began the Jr. Great Books Reading
    program in 2006
  • Houghton Mifflin program adopted for the 5th
    grade in 2007
  • Increased direct specialized instruction to
    identified students in 2005
  • Reading Interventionist hired to work with
    non-identified at risk students in 2005

How We Now Teach Reading
  • Jr. Great Books program for 6th, 7th and 8th
    grade
  • Houghton Mifflin program for 5th grade
  • Pull-out full intensive reading instruction at
    all grade levels for identified students
  • Intervention for at risk readers in 5th, 6th,
    7th and 8th grade
