Carrier Optimal Routing
CARRIER OPTIMAL ROUTING COR FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW
2
Carrier Optimal Routing
What is Carrier Optimal Routing (COR)?
COR is a Computer Software Application that
creates compact, contiguous and safe City Carrier
Delivery Routes for the U S Postal Service by
utilizing specifically designed algorithms that
incorporate USPS rules and regulations. A second
set of algorithms creates optimal travel paths
for the carrier routes which reduces unnecessary
travel and results in savings in work hours, fuel
and vehicle costs, and ultimately captures energy
savings.

Carrier Optimal Routing
Carrier Optimal Routing - COR
This next slide displays a 5-Digit Zone with City
Delivery. The routes are represented by various
colors and they are fragmented or divided
throughout the zone. This causes carriers to
travel unnecessarily and increases fuel and
energy costs while decreasing safety. Notice that
the arrow is pointing to a small section of the
zone where numerous routes cross through each
other.

Carrier Optimal Routing - COR
By utilizing COR in this carrier zone, work hours
were reduced, travel and vehicle costs were
reduced, and safety for the carriers was improved
through the reduction of unnecessary travel.
Energy and fuel savings were also realized. The
arrow points to the same location where routes
are now clearly defined and do not cross through
each other.

Carrier Optimal Routing - COR
The next two slides focus on one of the actual
routes from this zone, Carrier Route C031. Prior
to the COR Adjustment, Route C031 was fragmented
through the zone in several locations. After COR
was utilized, Route C031 became compact,
contiguous and safer by reducing unnecessary
travel. This allowed the carrier to serve more
deliveries instead of having to spend time
traveling through the zone to various pieces of
the route.

Carrier Optimal Routing - COR
By utilizing COR in this City Delivery zone and
in other zones nationwide, work hours are
reduced, travel and vehicle costs are reduced,
and safety for the carriers is improved through
the reduction of unnecessary travel. This also
leads to important Energy savings. COR will be
utilized for zones nationwide as the graphic
databases are prepared and completed. Currently
databases are at the following levels
11
Carrier Optimal Routing
  • COR Database Preparation
  • Total Zones Nationwide with 10 or More Routes
    6,124
  • COR Database Prep Completed in Zones 2,610
    (43)
  • Total FSS Phase 1 Zones 1,725
  • COR Database Prep Phase 1 FSS Zones 1,226
    (71)

COR is also scheduled to be utilized in carrier
zones that will receive the U S Postal Services
automated Flat Sorting System (FSS). The ability
to predict future workload was built into the
current COR software to enable FSS sites to
predict future carrier route structures. The
system allows input into an FSS screen so that
percents of levels of automation can be utilized
to determine route structures of the future. The
following slides demonstrate how the data is
input and the results.

Carrier Optimal Routing - COR
The first slide shows the current level of
automated letters (DPS). It shows no automated
flat pieces (FSS). The second slide shows data
entered showing FSS at 80. The number of
carrier routes is reduced from 32 to 22 based on
actual workload. The next slide indicates what
the new routes will physically look like after
FSS automation. The next 3 slides follow Carrier
Route C031 from Existing, to Actual COR
adjustment, and then to what it would like in the
Future with 80 FSS.

The future of the U S Postal Service depends on
utilizing technology and advancements to ensure
costs are minimized and service is maximized. COR
is one of the technologies that will ensure a
bright future for the U S Postal Service.
