Background knowledge English names are often
chosen because of their meaning, or someone in
the family has the same name, like a favourite
grandparent or aunt or uncle. Many given names
have their origin in the Bible, or originate from
the names of famous kings or warriors throughout
European history. In Great Britain many of the
family names are Anglo-Saxon or French in origin.
In America, family names originate from the
people who came over to settle there. Therefore,
one can find names almost every different
nationality.
