Study Design
  • Compared 3-year death rates of 4 consecutive
nationally representative samples of U.S. adults
    (19971998, 19992000, 20012002, and 20032004)
using data from National Health Interview Surveys
    linked to National Death Index

Conclusions
  • Death rates among both U.S. men and women with
diabetes declined substantially between 1997 and
    2006
  • Absolute difference between adults with and
    without diabetes has narrowed
  • Encouraging findings, however, suggest that
diabetes prevalence likely to rise in the future
    if diabetes incidence not curtailed
