    at school and at home) is essential for reading

Spelling
  • Use the Harcourt Trophies Spelling Program.
  • Basic skills taught phonics, spelling rules,
    patterns, word origins, spelling.
  • Spelling is assessed and evaluated on an ongoing
    basis through classroom writing samples, daily
    spelling lessons, dictated sentences, and
    quizzes.
  • The true test of spelling mastery is its transfer
    to and application in student writing on a daily
    basis.

  • Writers Workshop
  • Steps in the writing process prewriting,
    drafting, revising, editing, publishing
  • Six traits of writing ideas, organization,
    voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions

  • Scott Foresman DNealian Handwriting
  • Emphasis on correct handwriting in all written
    work
  • Cursive is not taught in 2nd grade.
  • It is now part of the 3rd grade curriculum.

Listening and Speaking Skills
  • Students will be taught to effectively use
    listening and speaking skills in a variety of
    situations.
  • -For example oral reports, Writers
    Workshop and Readers Theatre.

Library and Techology
  • Students will visit library weekly to check out
    books and learn library/media skills.
  • We visit the Computer Lab every week and use the
    classroom laptops to create multimedia projects,
    do research using the internet, and explore
    various computer programs
  • Five wireless laptops per classroom
  • Intensive teacher training, as well as
    collaboration
  • Tools used to enhance learning by being
    incorporated into all thematic units

  • Please be sure to have your child wear tennis
    shoes on Tuesday. ?

Classroom Management
  • Based on cooperation and respect of all

  • Praise rewarded for positive behaviors
  • Private redirection of negative behaviors
  • Individual Daily Behavior Plans if necessary
  • Weekly Reports- sent home Friday, to be signed
    and returned the following Monday

Homework
  • 2nd Grade Homework Expectations
  • - Weekly homework is assigned on Monday, due on
    Friday. Please look in your childs Communication
    Folder. (Note If you need an extension over the
    weekend, just send a note in on Friday to inform
    us of the change.
  • Students are to do homework thoroughly. Parents
    and students sign the contract.
  • Students are to do homework neatly.
  • The Harcourt Trophies reading book must be
    brought back to school each day. We do not have
    extras.
  • Weekly reading, writing, spelling and math
    practice at home is part of homework.

  • LOVE THEM!!!
  • Work with kids
  • Some workroom stuff
  • Let me know if you would like to volunteer if you
    have not already
  • Library Helpers are needed too! Sign up with
    Janice Rubocki
  • If interested, there are many PTO opportunities
    to volunteer.

School Policies
  • Classroom Snacks- Wellness Law
  • Please do not send in any homemade snacks.
    Please donate store bought healthy snacks only.
  • Birthdays
  • Please mail all birthday invitations (dont
    bring/send them to school), this helps avoid
    anyone getting their feelings hurt.
  • Please no Birthday treats of any kind. Thank you!
  • Your child will receive a Birthday acknowledgment
    at school from myself, the administration and on
    the morning announcements.

Miscellaneous
  • Snacks- sign up on the snack schedule
  • Label items (backpack, lunch box, jackets etc.)
  • Always send lunch in an envelope with your
    childs name on it.
  • Car Pick- Up Use tag board name plate in car
    window. If you are picking up multiple families,
    please list the last names of all families
    involved in your carpool. (Only driving through)
  • Ramada Pick up please park and designate a
    meeting spot!
  • Bus passes will not be issued unless parents call
    the transportation department _at_ 480-541-1700 for
    emergency purposes only.
  • To reduce the number of after school issues,
    please do not call the office after 100 to make
    a transportation change unless it is an
    emergency.
  • Please return library books on Friday.
  • Stuffed Animal Day is this Friday... Information
    will be sent home soon!
