1
FGDC Marine and Coastal Spatial Data Subcommittee
FY 07 Report
  • Tony LaVoi, NOAA Coastal Services Center

2
Summary of Accomplishments
  • Purpose and responsibilities of the group
  • The subcommittee, through its member agencies and
the FGDC, will work to develop strategic
    partnerships, relevant standards, and provide
outreach that will enhance access to ocean and
    coastal framework data.
  • Current Status
  • Currently active with approximately 20 active
members and over 100 subscribed to our list
server. The Subcommittee updated its work plan
    early in FY 2007.
  • Accomplishments in 2007
  • The subcommittee co-hosted the JSOST Interagency
Working Group on Ocean and Coastal Mapping data
inventory workshop. The goal of the workshop was
to develop the requirements for an inventory of
completed and planned ocean and coastal mapping
activities and a clearinghouse for data and
    interpretive information.  The IWG-OCM was
established by the U.S. Ocean Action Plan and
reports to the Joint Subcommittee on Ocean
Science and Technology (JSOST).  The inventory is
a direct response to the U.S. Ocean Action Plan,
as well as the Energy Policy Act of 2005, and OMB
Circular A-16. During the workshop, the working
group decided to use the GOS Oceans and Coast
community to house the inventory and the GOS
    Marketplace to advertise planned acquisitions.
  • Emerging Issues
  • Developing approaches for distributed access to
marine and coastal framework data as well as
coordinating with other initiatives such as the
IWG-OCM, the multipurpose marine cadastre, and
Geospatial One-Stop is an ongoing activity. It
is the goal of the Subcommittee to provide a
venue for coordinating and communicating on these
    issues.
  • Next Steps
  • Endorsement of the National Shoreline Data
    Content Standard.
  • Continue to work with the IWG-OCM to develop the
requirements for a comprehensive ocean and
    coastal data inventory.
