Title: air mass, air pressure, high pressure, low pressure, occluded front, stationary front, warm front, cold front, hurricane, tornado, thunderstorm
1Weather Vocabulary
- air mass, air pressure, high pressure, low
pressure, occluded front, stationary front, warm
front, cold front, hurricane, tornado,
thunderstorm
2weather
- changes each time a new air mass moves over an
area. - describes the condition of the atmosphere at a
specific time. - is always changing because of movement of air
and moisture in the atmosphere.
3air mass-
- a large body of air that has the same properties
throughout - can be warm, cool, wet, or dry depending the type
of land or sea it passes over - sixth different types of air masses that affect
our country
4air pressure-
the downward pressure exerted by the weight of
the overlying atmosphere.
5high pressure
- an area where the air is slowly sinking
- clouds dont usually form when air is sinking
- usually means good clear weather
- usually pushed out toward areas of low pressure
6low pressure
- an area where the air is slowly rising
- clouds often form in areas of low pressure
- air masses move toward areas of low pressure
- usually cloudy or rainy
7front
- area in which two types of air masses meet
- includes both cold and warm air masses
- high pressure system moves into a low-pressure
system at a front - four types of fronts
8occluded front
A cold front overtakes a warm front. Changes with
temperature, dew point temperature, wind
direction, and wind shift often occur with an
occluded front. It generally brings low
temperatures, and light rains.
9stationary front
- warm air meets cool air and the masses do not
have enough force to lift the - warm air over the cold
- brings light winds and wet weather, sometimes
lasting for several days
10warm front
The transition zone where a warm air mass
overtakes and replaces a colder air mass.
11cold front
The transition zone where a colder air mass
overtakes and replaces a warmer air mass.
12hurricane
Tropical cyclone, formed in the atmosphere over
warm ocean areas, in which wind speeds reach 74
miles per hour or more and blow in a large spiral
around a relatively calm center or "eye."
Circulation is counter-clockwise in the Northern
Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern
Hemisphere.
13tornado
a violent, rotating column of air which is in
contact with both the surface of the earth and a
cumulonimbus cloud or, in rare cases, the base of
a cumulus cloud. Tornadoes come in many sizes but
are typically in the form of a visible
condensation funnel, whose narrow end touches the
earth and is often encircled by a cloud of
debris.
14thunderstorm
a storm resulting from strong rising air
currents heavy rain or hail along with thunder
and lightning

values. Mode- a value that has the highest
frequency within a set of values.
