Pedography what does this mean?
  • visual observation just shows the contact of
    the foot with the floor
  • foot has inhomogeneous internal structure
    (bones, muscules, tendons, ligaments etc.)
  • results in an inhomogeneous loading
pattern of the foot, which is recorded as
    a pressure distribution,

3
Pedography what does this mean?
  • this pressure distribution is changing
    during the roll over process,
  • is determined by the function of the
    different anatomical structures (heel, toes
    etc. incl. their muscles activities),
  • the measurement of this pressure
    distribution underneath the foot for
    functional diagnostics is called
    Pedography

4
Pedography what is it used for?
  • for early recognition of areas on high risk to
ulcerate for patients with Diabetic Foot
    Syndrome,
  • for designing of orthotics,
  • prove the pressure reduction of orthotics and
    therapeutic footwear

5
emed Pedography The system
- the emed Pedography system consists of a
platform with several thousand calibrated
pressure sensors,
- each sensor will be scanned up to 400 times per
second,
- the patient is walking barefoot across the
platform,
- the data are transmitted to the PC for further
scientific data evaluation

7
emed Pedography Why doing a dynamic measurement?
static dynamic
Clear difference in peak pressure and loading
pattern! Dynamic loading is much higher and
reflects load during walking.

Designof a pressure reducing orthotic based on
emed Pedography
  • starting point pre-designed blank
  • dynamic pressure distribution during barefoot
    walking will be overlayed,
  • structural information about foot shape can be
    added too,
  • based on this a new orthotic is desiged

11
The orthotic is manufactured by a CAM system
12
Therapy Control by pedar In-shoe Pedography
  • control of shoe and orthotic treatment,
  • gait analysis,
  • motivation of patient
  • max. 256 (1,024) sensors
  • 20.000 sen./s 100 pictures/s
  • 20 600 kPa, accuracy better as 5

Summary for Pedography
  • the emed pedographic platform is used for early
diagnosis of neuropathic foot problems and
detection of high- risk pressure points,
  • for the prove of pressure reduction of the
orthotic the pedar in shoe system is used
  • Both systems complement each other
