Knowledge Level of Cardiovascular Disease Risk
Factors in Adults Who Have Participated in a
Cardiac Rehab Program
  • Pamela Bartlo, PT, DPT, CCS
  • Dawn Hayes, PT, PhD, GCS

3
Background
  • Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading
cause of death in the US.
  • Government and private entities have tried to
educate the public on the risk factors associated
    with CVD for many years.
  • Yet the incidence of CVD remains high.
Therefore, it is important to assess whether
adults are obtaining this knowledge and which
educational methods may achieve that the best.

4
Purpose
  • The purpose of this study was to assess the
knowledge level of CVD risk factors in adults
that have participated in a cardiac rehab
    program.
  • Also to examine if differences existed in the
type of educational method used and the knowledge
level of men compared to women.

5
Methods
  • Survey Tool
  • Subjects completed a 3 part survey that consisted
of 11 questions using a five point Likert scale.
  • First part of the survey demographic
    information.
  • Second part asked where or how subjects had
received previous education of CVD risk factors.
  • Third part asked 11 questions assessing
subjects knowledge of modifiable risk factors.

6
Methods Contd
  • Data analysis
  • Differences in frequency of educational methods
    used were examined with Chi-square
  • Differences in survey total score between types
of educational methods was examined using
    independent t-test.
  • Pearson Chi-square was used to determine
differences in educational method used by gender.

7
Results by Educational Method
  • Convenience sample of 51 subjects (71.7610.4
years, 65 male, 86 Caucasian) participated in
    this study.
  • Mean survey score for all subjects was 45.49/55
    or 82.7 correct.
  • Educational methods identified significantly,
    MOST often
  • Cardiac rehab phase I (p.003)
  • Books/magazines (plt.001)
  • LEAST often
  • Family discussion (p.008)
  • Internet resources (plt.001)
  • Radio and community groups (plt.001 p.003)

8
Results by Gender
  • No significant differences in survey total scores
    between educational methods, gender, or
    ethnicity.
  • Gender differences noted in three educational
    methods.
  • Females were 2.0 times more likely (p.014) to
    choose a television special program
  • Females 1.6 times more likely (p.042) to choose
    family member experience
  • Females 2.4 times more likely (p.045) to choose
    medically-oriented websites

Conclusions
  • Subjects overall knowledge regarding CVD risk
    factors was good.
  • Previous educational methods did not affect
survey total score, but relevant differences were
noted in educational methods chosen most and
    least often.
  • Subjects that had participated in cardiac rehab
phase II programs obtained risk factor education
primarily from phase I cardiac rehab and from
    books/magazines.
  • Subjects were least likely to use the internet or
    radio for information.
  • Differences in previous educational methods did
    exist between males and females.
  • It appears gender should be considered when
determining choice of methodology for cardiac
    risk factor educational.

12
Implications for PT
  • Physical Therapists play an integral role in
    cardiac rehab programs.
  • Based on this studys results, education about
CVD risk factors via cardiac rehab and books or
magazines will be the most effective for
    knowledge development.
  • Specific to women TV specials, family discussion,
and medical websites may be more effective than
    they are for men.

13
Limitations
  • Relatively small sample size
  • Low representation of minority ethnicities
  • Higher proportion of males (although not
    uncharacteristic of CVD population)

Future Studies
  • Should examine possible relationships based on
    ethnicity.
