How and why it was started

• Passed by congress to ensure safety of food,
  drugs, and cosmetics
• safe means that there is "reasonable certainty
  that no harm will result from aggregate exposure
  to the pesticide residue."
• Act influenced by death of 100 patients by
  diethylene glycol which was used to dissolve
  sulfanilamide medication to make a liquid form

What does it do?

• Food Category controls all food coloring
  additives to be labeled and named .recently it
  may require some genetically modified foods to be
  labeled
• Drugs Category requires people to notify the
  drug and their intent at least 90 days before
  marketing
• Cosmetics may deny certain cosmetics if
  chemicals used are filthy or decomposed, if it
  has been packaged in insanitary conditions, if
  container is composed of poisonous material, or
  if dyes are unsafe
