Title: Vertebrates / Invertebrates

1
Vertebrates / Invertebrates
  • Brandi NunnPeach County Schools

2
STANDARD
  • S5L1a. Demonstrate how animals are sorted into
groups (vertebrate and invertebrate) and how
vertebrates are sorted into groups (fish,
    amphibian, reptile, bird, and mammal).S7L1b.
    Classify organisms based on physical
characteristics using a dichotomous key of the
    six kingdom system (animals).

3
Vertebrate
  • An animal with a backbone.
  • Fish
  • Bird
  • Reptile
  • Amphibian
  • Mammal

4
Question
  • What does a vertebrate have?

5
Fish
  • Some fish, like sharks, have skeletons made of
cartilage instead of bone. Fish breathe through
    an organ called gills.
  • shark
  • catfish
  • stingray

6
QUESTION
  • What do fish breathe through?

7
Birds
  • Not all birds can fly. Birds have feathers, walk
on two hind limbs, and have front limbs that are
wings. Their bones are strong but very
    lightweight.
  • ostrich
  • hawk
  • owl

8
Reptiles
  • Reptiles breathe through lungs. Most have
waterproof scales on their skin that keep them
from drying out on land. Their eggs have a
leathery or hard covering that protects the eggs
    from drying out.
  • snake
  • crocodile
  • turtle

9
Question
  • What do reptiles breathe through?

10
Amphibians
  • Most adult amphibians have four legs and skin
that is not covered with scales. Adult amphibians
breathe with lungs. In their early stages of life
amphibians live in water. As adults, most live on
    land.
  • frogs
  • toads
  • salamanders

11
Question
  • Give an example of an amphibian.

12
Mammals
  • We belong to the group called mammals. All
mammals feed their young milk. At one time or
another, all mammals have at least some hair or
fur. Most mammals have larger brains than other
    vertebrates.
  • whale
  • squirrel
  • humans

13
QUESTION
  • Give an example of an animal with a vertebrate.

14
Invertebrate
  • An animal that does not have a backbone.
  • Arthropods
  • Mollusks
  • Nematodes
  • Annelids

15
QUESTION
  • Does an invertebrate have a backbone?

16
Arthropods
  • These animals have a tough outer skeleton,
jointed legs, and a body made up of two, three,
or more sections. There are more arthropods on
earth than any other kind of animal.
  • insects
  • spiders
  • centipedes
  • lobsters
  • crabs

17
Mollusks
  • Almost all mollusks have a shell. The shell may
be either inside or outside the body. Mollusks
have three main body parts, a kind of foot, a
tissue covering called a mantle, and a
compartment holding internal organs. They have
    gills for breathing.
  • snails
  • octopuses
  • clams

18
Nematodes
  • These are also called roundworms. These animals
have round bodies, a digestive system, and a
simple nervous system. Roundworms live all over
earth, including inside plants and animals.
  • hookworms
  • heartworms

19
Annelids
  • These are also called segmented worms. Many
segmented worms have eyes and other specialized
organs, such as jaws or gills. Each of these
animals also has a circulatory, digestive, and
    nervous system.
  • earthworm
  • leeches

20
QUESTION
  • Give an example of an animal that is an
    invertebrate.
