• The Digestive System turns FOOD into the fuel we
  need for energy and materials we need to grow and
  repair cells.

Digestion in the mouth

• We chew our food with our teeth, mix it with
  saliva with our tongue and swallow (Food bolus).

Digestion in the stomach

• The esophagus has muscular walls to push the food
  bolus along to the stomach.

Digestion in the stomach

• The stomach mixes the food bolus, liquids and
  digestive juices for about two hours (chyme).

• Digestive juices in the small intestine
  (including bile from liver and pancreatic juices
  from pancreas) break down our food (chyle).

Digestion in the small intestine

• Food is pushed through the seven meters of small
  intestine. Nutrients are absorbed into the blood
  and circulate throughout the body.

• Nutrients that are not used by the body reach the
  large intestine water and minerals are absorbed
  into blood, waste products remain and become
  faeces to expel.
