What A Wonderful World
2
Aims and Objectives
  • Aim To look at the sense of awe and wonder about
    the world we live in.
  • Objective To create a museum archive of
documents relating back to the 1800s.
  • To create an archive about the world we enjoy
    today.

3
Your favourite day/holiday
Share your picture that you have brought in with
your partner. Where was the picture
taken? Describe to your partner what made this
day/holiday special. Did you see any new things?
Did you take part in any new activities? Describe
some of the things you saw around you sights,
smells, tastes, etc What was the reason for your
visit? How do you tend to record your holidays or
communicate home?
4
The Past
  • Close your eyes and imagine you have gone back
in a time machine. In the 1800s there were wasnt
the technology that we have today.
  • Why did people travel in the past?
  • How did they record their voyages?
  • How do we know about peoples experiences in the
    past?
  • We are now going to take a journey back to the
    1800s

5
Captain Robert Carter Oakley
  • Born in Wimborne 1795.
  • He was a 19th Century soldier who documented his
    travels through a detailed journal.
  • He travelled to Ireland, Spain and France and
    also guarded the defeated Napoleon.
  • In 1828 he travelled to India to rejoin his
regiment. He kept a beautifully illustrated
journal of his voyage aboard the Duchess of
Athol. It was a 93 day voyage (3 months) which
    was full of incident.
  • The journal contains illustrations of sharks and
    sucking fish
  • The journal is important as it tells us about the
dangers of crossing the oceans where sailors were
    frequently lost overboard or died.
  • Travelling like this was often long and
    dangerous.
  • Robert died in 1835 aged 40. He is buried in
    India.

Your Mission
  • To work in groups of three.
  • To dress up as a Victorian traveller and have
their photo taken by one of your group. You will
then record what you saw on your voyage using the
    archive material.
  • Working with the Victorian traveller you will be
the illustrator, documenting what you saw on your
travels. Use the pictures to help you and ensure
that you are both working on the same paragraph.
  • One to leave a snip of your own history by
writing about your own favourite holiday.
  • Extension all to complete your favourite
    holiday.

    reasons in 200 years?
