NMP4-SL-260132COOL-COVERINGSPARALLEL SESSION
CERAMIC TILESConclusions next steps
KERABEN GRUPO, S.A. Miguel Angel Bengochea
6 months follow-up meeting 9-10th
December2010 CSGI. Treviso-ITALY.

Technical requirements for Ceramic Tiles
  • Technical requirements in terms of NIR
characteristics expected, standards and norms to
be accomplished by the final products and use
requirements of the new building systems (based
    on each material QFD).
  • 30 microns for the particle size of the selected
    oxides, crystal in nano sizes.
  • Al2O3 pure in the trials, an estimation of 10
    of alumina is reasonable
  • dirt will affect the reflection (depends on
particles size and amount of dirt) aging tests
scheduled will show the effect of this event
  • temp is a critical issue. It has to be 1200ºC
what will happen with the crystalline structure
at this temp. It has to be researched what will
happen if will there are integration with the
    matrix.
  • step 1 to lay alumina on top a dark tile with
low temp (800ºC). if results are good then well
try with temp by mixing with commercial frits at
    high temp (1.200ºC).
  • aging tests we must start them very soon
because last so much UV radiation, temp, the
couple freeze-defreeze-dirt are the only topics
    than may cause aging problems.
  • We have no big concern about accomplishing
standards , as far alumina is a standard product
used in ceramics to reach the better
    characteristics of functional use.

Technical requirements for Ceramic Tiles
  • Technical requirements in terms of NIR
characteristics expected, standards and norms to
be accomplished by the final products and use
requirements of the new building systems (based
    on each material QFD).
  • ITC send s to UNIVPM and IRIS samples of std
    tiles to check reflection measures.
  • To avoid modeling results dispersion, we should
define a preferred color to be improved by NIR
additives dark ones are those where the
improvement can be higher therefore are the first
    target.
  • Contingency plan as forecasted, to apply the
nanostructured NIR reflecting particles by using
an organic top coat already developed by ITC for
another applications.TNO proposes to use a sol
gel coating, prepared at 300ºC that will have no
UV radiation resistance problems as may occur
    with organic coatings

Ceramic Tiles
  • NEXT STEPS
  • END OF DECEMBER
  • ITC send s to UNIVPM and IRIS samples of std
tiles to check reflection measures f conventional
tiles. This feeds up the deliverable D.3.1. about
    conventional tiles NIR properties.
  • END OF JANUARY
  • MBN sends 1 kg nanoparticles to ITC detail on
    what in the next weeks
  • END OF FEBRUARY
  • ITC obtaining first samples of tiles on nano
    alumina.
  • Test by ITC and then UNIVPM, IRIS
  • Price/sqm quantification of the amount if
nanomaterial o put in the tile.
  • To run more detailed thermal analysis different
colors in particular cases. First priority to
dark colors among chosen in first ITC trials

Limitations in costs for Ceramic Tiles
  • Target cost, in terms of nanocrystalline
    materials to be used, and
  • final building systems to be developed.

Market Price for cool ventilated tiles (net of tax) 43 /m2
Market Price for cool bonded tiles (net of tax) 30 /m2
8
Technical strategy for needed research for
Ceramic Tiles
  • Technical strategy to be applied to achieve the
    desired performance and cost.
  • Selection of nanocrystalline materials for the
    research phase.

9
  • Objective
  • decrease aSOLAR without changing colour (aVISIBLE)
  • Approach
  • use of nanostructured oxides TiO2, Al2O3, MgO,
    Fe2O3, Cr2O3
  • use of pigments with high NIR reflectance

theoretical values0 NIR absorption
10
Industrial processes for Ceramic Tiles
  • Industrial processes affected,
  • potential modifications, its admissible impact if
needed in terms of technology and cost.
