Goals Strategies
Goal 1 Strengthen academic research in nanoscience in PR Increase PR's community of active nanoscientists from 40 to 55 Strengthen and develop critical nanotechnology facilities to carry on cutting edge research in PR Promote the development of nanotechnology RD at 4-year colleges
Goal 2 Mainstream the Jurisdictions research efforts to enable PR to perform competitive international nanoscience Strategically partner and collaborate with ten national laboratories and centers Mentoring of postdocs, graduate fellows and young faculty at strategic partner institutions
Goal 3 Contribute to PRs economic development by enhancing the capacity for innovation and T2 in nanoscience Develop at least three testbeds to facilitate commercialization. Partner with national and local nanobusinesses to commercialize intellectual products of the IFN Contribute to the implementation of the Jurisdictions ST policy
Goal 4 Enable the Jurisdiction to attain long term sustainability for nano RD and educational enterprise Mature three clusters into competitive interdisciplinary research groups. Attain research cohesiveness in order to compete for national science and engineering centers and institutes Gain approval from UPR Board of Trustees to become MM Institute.
Goal 5 Contribute to the diversity of the national workforce in nanoscience Introduce nano concepts and principles in the K-12 and University level curriculum. Enable 42 Hispanic graduate students to obtain their PhD in nanoscience.

IFN Strategic Plan Development and Implementation
  • November 2010
  • Two day retreat was organized to develop the IFN
    Strategic plan.
  • The fifteen IFN Task Force Members and three
    members of the EPSCoR State Committee
    representing the entrepreneurial sector developed
    the plan.
  • January 2011
  • Plan was submitted to NSF and it is currently
    being used to guide the development of the IFN.
  • Evaluation of the performance of the first year
    (October 2010 June 2011) against the milestones
    of the IFN Strategic Plan reflected that all
    major milestones were completed and that the
    implementation of the IFN is on track.
  • The IFN External Advisory Board will evaluate the
    performance of the IFN in December 2011 with the
    participation of the IFN External Evaluator.

Jurisdictional Impact Indicators
  • On a yearly basis the IFN generates 25 of all
    ST peer reviewed publications in the University
    of Puerto Rico The University of Puerto Rico
    publishes 92 of all ST peer reviewed
    publications in the Jurisdiction.
  • Since its creation the IFN has submitted over 36
    patents making the institute the major source of
    ST patents in the Jurisdiction.
  • The IFN institute is the largest and most
    developed ST Institute in the Jurisdiction.
  • The director of PRIDCO (the economic development
    corporation of the Jurisdiction) recognize the
    importance of the Institute to the Jurisdictions

UPR Humacao
