Purpose
  • To present educators with an explanation of the
VPK Assessment score types and reports used in
the VPK Assessment Online Reporting System
  • To assist educators with the interpretation of
Assessment Period 1 VPK Assessment data
  • To provide educators with a link between the
  • interpretation of data and instructional
    resources for planning instruction

3
Guiding Questions
  • What do assessment results mean for my
  • instruction?
  • What VPK Assessment Online Reporting System
reports would be helpful for planning
    instruction?
  • How can I organize my children for instruction?
  • What are some resources to help me address
  • those needs?

3
4
What is assessment?
  • Assessment is a method for collecting information
about something you want to measure. We conduct
assessments daily (e.g., stock market gains,
weight loss, student progress). Data collection
can fall into two categories, formal and informal
    assessment.

5
Types of Assessments
  • Screening assessments
  • can help to sort information based on defined
    criteria.
  • are usually administered with children at the
    beginning of the school year.
  • Progress Monitoring assessments
  • are administered multiple times throughout the
year to gather information about change over
    time.
  • track progress toward benchmarks so that changes
can be made in instruction to meet childrens
    needs.
  • evaluate whether the core curriculum is effective
for the majority of the children.

6
Why Do We Collect This Information?
  • To make decisions about instruction
  • To determine when a child needs more support
  • To determine if the instructional changes made
are working for the group as a whole as well as
    individual children

7
VPK Assessment Score Types
  • Raw Score - total number of items correct
  • Percentage Correct the number correct
expressed as a fraction of 100 (e.g. 80 is equal
    to 80/100)
