Math and Technologyin the Elementary ClassroomA
Staff Meeting Presentation
  • By Jennifer Matlick

2
Background Information
  • The Lakeview Public Schools Math Curriculum is
based on the Everyday, or Chicago Math Series.
  • This series discourages the use of technology,
    particularly calculators.

3
Affordances of Technology
  • Transformation
  • How does the use of technology transform the
    lesson?
  • Collaboration
  • How does the use of technology promote
    communication among students and teachers?
  • Information
  • How does the technology provide students with
    information?
  • Representation
  • Does the technology present the material in a new
    and different way?

4
Ways Technology Benefits Math Instruction in the
Classroom
  • Reinforces previously taught concepts
  • Solves complex mathematical algorithms more
    efficiently and accurately
  • Leads to exploration and discovery of new
    concepts
  • Provides complex real world situations and
    promotes real world solutions
  • Eliminates human calculation errors assuming
    algorithms are correctly inputted
  • Graphic simulations replace tedious paper-pencil
    representations of concepts
  • Allows students to manipulate data, therefore
encouraging them to make assumptions about
various possible outcomes when dealing with
    mathematical variables

6
Possible Ways to Implement Technology into the
Classroom
  • Centers
  • Group Projects
  • During Math Game Times
  • Bypassing the text and allowing calculator usage
    on some activities
  • Additional Math Programs that enhance our current
    series

7
Benefits of Using Technology in Math
  • Increased understanding of concepts
  • Solve more complex mathematical problems
  • Explain mathematical thinking to others
  • Graph data more accurately
  • Manipulate data
  • Show variable differences

8
Final Thoughts
  • Technology is not a crutch that students can lean
on making them math disabled, but it is an
    intellectual and emotional laboratory powering
    them to new heights.
  • How can we expect our students to be successful
in a future filled with technology, if we dont
    prepare them?
