Smeatons Eddystone??
The fifth lighthouse was built by Sir James
Douglass and lit in 1882. As such, its shape and
features - based upon the design of Smeaton -
have epitomised the very symbol of lighthouses
with which every schoolchild is familiar. The
Eddystone was automated in 1982 and automation of
all Trinity House lights is expected to be
completed by 1997. As a result, the lighthouse
keeper is no longer needed and by the turn of the
century, there will be none left, in this country
at least.
