The Land Bridge Beringia
  • The American continent spans two hemispheres.
  • From the Arctic Circle in the north to Antarctica
    in the south.
  • These continents are isolated from the other
    continents by vast oceans.

4
Setting the Stage
  • The civilizations in America followed the same
patterns as civilizations in other parts of the
    world.
  • First they were hunter-gathers. Then they
    developed farming.
  • This led to the first civilizations in the
    Americas

5
North and South
6
South America
7
They did what.?
  • During the Ice Age, there was a land bridge
    between Asia and North America.
  • The land bridge is known as Beringia.
  • People migrated from Asia to North America by
    walking across Beringia.

Dammits mad brick! Lets Bounce!

The genes are the same?
10
Primary Source
  • What a wild world it was!! To see it properly, we
must board a time machine and travel back into
the Ice Age. The northern half of North America
was vanished, buried beneath ice sheets two miles
thick. Stretching south to Kentucky, they buckle
the earths crust with their weight Animals grow
oversize.. Elephant-eating jaguars stand tall as
lions, beavers grow as big as bears, South
American sloths as tall as giraffes. With aortic
cold pushing so far southward, walrus bask on
Virginia beaches and musk-oxen graze from
    Maryland to California.
  • Thomas Canby The Search for the first American
  • What might account for the abundance of animal
    life that Canby describes?

11
The Effects of Agriculture
Before Agriculture After Agriculture
People hunted and gathered food. More reliable food source
Families migrated in search of animals and food. Families settled down and built communities
Humans spent a lot of time looking for food. Complex societies developed.
How did life change after the development of agriculture? How might the establishment of agriculture have helped humans to develop new skills and interests?
12
Going Camping.
  • Imagine you are an ancient American.it is mad
brick in North America. You and your family
decide its time to move south. For better
weather and food. You will be traveling for at
least 3 months. What would you bring with you on
    the journey.
  • Remember you do not have a car. You will have to
carry all your belongings. You may be able to
use a sled pulled by dogs but that is it.
  • What do you take with you. Put the things that
are most important at the top of your list.
