• Also fails being a religious missionary
• Marriage proposal turned down
• Returns home to live with his parents

• Moves to Brussels and studies at Royal Academy of
  Art
• Starts painting in his late twenties
• Color palette is somber earth tones
• Moves to Paris in 1886 discovers impressionists
• Complains that brother Theo is not selling his
  work-Theo says too dark

Van Gogh used heavy brush strokes. His artwork
was often painted in blues, reds, yellows and
greens. You can see and feel the heavy texture
in his paintings. He often used a palette
knife.

Youll begin by drawing hills, trees, and a sky
in chalk pastels.

Then youll add detail in the sky and grass using
oil pastels.

Youll create a swirly sky in cool colors (blues,
greens, purples)

or a radiating sun in warm colors (reds,
yellows, oranges).

Lastly, youll use colored construction paper to
mount your drawing and add a leaf rubbing to the
corner.
