Title: Sin, in the words of God

1
SIN
In the Words of God
2
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory
of God (Rom. 323)
  • Sin is a universal subject.
  • Sin is a personal subject.
  • Sin has consequences.

3
According to man, sin is
  • crime, misdeed, wrongdoing, error, imperfection,
    mistake, vice,
  • shortcoming, fault, wrong, weakness

4
1. Lawlessness
  • Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness,
    and sin is lawlessness
  • 1 John 34

5
1. Lawlessness
  • anomia
  • condition of one without law either because
ignorant of it, or because violating it contempt
    and violation of law (Thayer)
  • A condition in which the law of God is ignored,
held in contempt, or outright violated. Every sin
is a violation of some law of God.

6
2. Transgression
  • Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition
of the elders? For they do not wash their hands
when they eat bread. He answered and said to
them, Why do you also transgress the commandment
of God because of your tradition?
  • Matthew 152-3

7
2. Transgression
  • parabaino (verb)
  • to go contrary to, to violate a command
    (Strong).
  • to go beyond (Vine)
  • parabates (transgressor)
  • one who oversteps the prescribed limit (Vine).

8
2. Transgression
  • Law of God sets forth the boundary.

9
2. Transgression
  • Law of God sets forth the boundary.
  • To transgress is to step over that boundary

10
2. Transgression
  • Whoever transgresses and does not abide in
the doctrine of Christ does not have God
  • 2 John 9

  • Off To the Side - Deut. 532

13
4. Trespass
  • For if you forgive men their trespasses, your
heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you
do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will
    your Father forgive your trespasses
  • Matthew 614-15

14
4. Trespass
  • paraptoma
  • a false step, a blunder (para, aside, pipto,
to fall), then a lapse from uprightness, a
sin, a moral trespass, misdeed (Vine).

15
4. Trespass
  • Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass
    (Gal. 61)
  • the thought is that of the believer being found
off his guard, the trespass taking advantage of
    him (Vine)

16
4. Trespass
  • And you He made alive, who were dead in
    trespasses and sins (Eph. 21)
  • There is a distinction between the two words, but
not in the seriousness of the consequences!

17
5. Unrighteousness
  • All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin
    not leading to death
  • 1 John 517

22
Collective Body of Sins
23
Collective Body of Sins
  • But in the fourth generation they shall
return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is
    not yet complete."
  • Genesis 1516

24
Collective Body of Sins
  • So she said to Elijah, What do I have to do
with you, O man of God? You have come to me to
bring my iniquity to remembrance, and to put my
    son to death!
  • 1 Kings 1718, NASV

25
Refers to the Deed and the Punishment
26
Refers to the Deed and the Punishment
  • You shall not bow down to them nor serve
them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God,
visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the
children to the third and fourth generations of
    those who hate Me
  • Exodus 205

27
Refers to the Deed and the Punishment
  • Since the days of our fathers to this day we
have been very guilty, and for our iniquities we,
our kings, and our priests have been delivered
into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the
sword, to captivity, to plunder, and to
humiliation, as it is this day
  • Ezra 97

28
Refers to the Deed and the Punishment
  • Know therefore that God exacts from you less
    than your iniquity deserves
  • Job 116

29
Refers to the Deed and the Punishment
  • Iniquity involves more than a single act, but the
entire body of our sin, including the guilt and
    the consequences.

30
Sin Is An Expression of the Heart
31
Sin Is An Expression of the Heart
  • At its deepest level, though, anomia is more
than specific lawless acts and attitudes. It is
basically an attitude toward the law of God as
such an inward hatred and hostility toward law,
a spirit of opposition to and rebellion against
authority, a demonic zeal for autonomy and for
freedom from law of all kinds (Cottrell, 162).

32
All Sin Is Committed Against God
  • Adultery - Genesis 399
  • Lying - Leviticus 61-7
  • Failing to help brethren - Num. 3220-23
  • Lying to the church - Acts 51-4
  • Against You, You only have I sinned, and done
evil in Your sight (Psalm. 514).

33
Sin Is A Violation Against God Himself
34
Sin Is A Violation Against God Himself
  • Sin is cosmic treason. Sin is treason against
a perfectly pure Sovereign. It is an act of
supreme ingratitude toward One to whom we owe
everything, to the One who has given us life
    itself.
  • Have you ever considered the deeper
implications of the slightest sin, of the most
minute peccadillo? What are we saying to our
Creator when we disobey Him at the slightest
point? We are saying no to the righteousness of
    God.

35
Sin Is A Violation Against God Himself
  • We are saying, God, Your law is not good.
My judgment is better than Yours. Your authority
does not apply to me. I am above and beyond Your
jurisdiction. I have the right to do what I want
to do, not what You command me to do.
  • The slightest sin is an act of defiance
against cosmic authority. It is a revolutionary
act, a rebellious act where we are setting
ourselves in opposition to the One to whom we owe
everything. It is an insult to His holiness
  • (R.C. Sproul, The Holiness of God)

36
If I am a sinner
  • There must be a law to which I am held
    accountable.
  • I can sin by doing wrong or by failing to do what
    is right.
  • I can sin willfully or unintentionally.
  • There are consequences for my sin.
  • My sin is more than a violation against Gods
law it is a violation against God Himself!
