Competitive analysis
  • photocoagulators

2
Competitor Analysis Multi-wavelength
  • Ellex products
  • Integre Duo
  • Main competitors
  • Lumenis Novus Varia
  • Nidek MC-300

3
Lumenis Novus Varia
  • Weaknesses
  • Very expensive three color laser system. is
unreachable by most clinics and private
    practices
  • Low maximum power output on red wavelength at
    600mW only
  • Exposed fibers increased risk of breaking
  • Reduced working distance with slit lamp
    attachments
  • Though laser cavities work independently from
each other, they are sealed in one common
environment. Hence if one needs replacement, the
other two have to be replaced as well
  • Expensive cavities (up to 40,000 AUD)
  • No HS slit lamp adapter

4
Lumenis Novus Varia
  • What they promote as their strengths
  • ClearView high-visibility physician-filter
  • SureSpot optics for even power distribution
across the spot and low corneal energy density
  • Safety and flexibility with automatic device
    detection and dual ports
  • Optimal for use in OR environment
  • Independent laser cavities. If one does not work,
the others still function (CaseSaverTM Mode)
  • New LIO available for three colors

5
Lumenis Novus Varia
6
Nidek MC-300
  • Weaknesses
  • Heavy and bulky (75 kg, console alone)
  • Internally water-cooled inefficient and
    inaccurate temperature control
  • Huge on power requirements (1000 VA power rating
    (10A _at_ 100VAC)
  • Can only be operated up to 33ºC, due to water
    cooling system
  • Long wait (5mins) before startup and shutdown due
    to water cooling system design
  • Red wavelength can be used only up to 700mW
  • Exposed fibers increased risk of breaking

7
Nidek MC-300
  • Weaknesses cont
  • Limited working distance
  • Safety filter optics are not color balanced
    (target appears pink-ish or purple-ish)
  • Costly maintenance due to complexity of system
  • Power adjustment is not continuously variable and
can only be made in 10mW increments

8
Nidek MC-300
  • What they promote as their strengths
  • Versatile with multiple delivery options
  • Multi-color aiming beam
  • Low price point

9

    break easily
  • Ease of use Ambidextrous controls on the slit
    lamp, central micromanipulator
  • Slitlamp optimized for retinal viewing excellent
depth of field and stereo vision

10
Integre Duo

    specialists

11
Integre Duo
  • What the competition may use against it
  • No yellow wavelength
  • Goes easier through opacified media than
    red/green
  • Safer to use around the fovea
  • Not absorbed by xanthophyl (neither is red, but
red penetrates deeper hence can easier cause
    choroidal hemorrhages)
  • Green laser wavelength has a similar absorption
profile as yellow and can be used in most cases.
Yellow only superior over green in 10 of cases.
  • Integrated design limits flexibility
  • LIO is difficult to connect

12

15
Iridex Oculight GL / GLx
  • Weaknesses
  • Power control knob has no detents, hence user has
to look at display to know what power level was
    selected
  • Though the cooling fan is supposed to work on
demand only, it runs the entire time. Indication
that system has thermal stability issues
  • Aiming beam can be turned off while the system is
in Ready mode. This is potentially dangerous as
the user has no visual indication that the system
    can fire.
  • Slit lamp adapters have only 5 fixed spot sizes
    selections not continuously variable

16
Iridex Oculight GL / GLx
  • Weaknesses cont
  • At small spot sizes the actual spot size exceeds
the requested size 75µm spot is actually
close to 100µm (measured in the Ellex lab)
  • Vertical offset adjustment of the aiming spot
difficult to access little clearance available
  • On Haag Streit style slit lamps, micromanipulator
arm can crash on slit lamp body
  • Self-centering micromanipulator is off-center in
the vertical axis (as much as 800 µm)
  • Fiber is exposed and thus prone to breaking

Lightmed Lightlas 532
  • Weaknesses
  • The system is very cheap in price which shows in
the overall quality of the product
  • The eye safety filter is not automatic and does
not have an interlock, hence there is risk that
the laser is fired without the ESF in place

    photocoagulators today use TEC

24
Optimedica PASCAL
  • Weaknesses
  • Very expensive
  • No procedure memory so the system will not be
able to remember how far a treatment was along if
    it was interrupted midway

illumination swing up to 45 to the right
  • Colour touch-screen LCD remote control
  • System is portable and can be positioned in a
    horizontal or vertical position

29
Quantel Vitra
  • Weaknesses
  • Low power 1 watt maximum
  • Controls not continuously variable
  • Micromanipulator is not self centering
  • No automatic device detection, user has to select
manually which can lead to mistakes
  • Unique fiber port connector which limits type of
endo probes that can be used
  • Footswitch control feature is not easy to use
need to select which parameter to control on the
    console first

    under table
  • Fiber port is located next to the surgeons knee
which increases the risk of fiber damage
  • No dual port option LIO has to be connected to
    slit lamp port
  • Two step remote control user has to select
parameter first and then change it
