Gastrointestinal Bleeding
  • Is any type of bleeding that occurs in the
    gastrointestinal tract from the pharynx to the
    rectum
  • Treatments involves proton pump inhibitors,
    octeotride, and antibiotics (Certain Cases)
  • There is also an emphasis on resuscitation by
    infusion of intravenous fluids and blood
    transfusion.
  • Gastrointestinal Bleeding is usually discovered
    by Upper endoscopy, Colonoscopy, or Capsule
    Endoscopy.

  • Upper endoscopy-Procedure that visualizes the
    uses upper part of the gastrointestinal tract up
    to the duodenom

Colonoscopy- examination of the large bowl and
the distal part of the small bowl.

What is Capsule Endoscopy?
  • A way to record images of the digestive tract
    through a small camera in the pill.
  • It is the size and shape of a pill. (11x26mm)
  • Created in Israel.
  • Adopted in the U.S
  • Approved by the U.S Food Drug Administration

Methods
  • Patient are required to fast for 12 hours before
    taking the capsule
  • Patients drink a Simethicone Solution
  • Thirdly, the patients have a belt tied around
    their waste. This belt contains a sensor.
  • 3)Next they swallow the capsule. After they
    swallow it they are required to not have anything
    in their mouths for 4 hours.

  • 4)After 8 hours sensor is removed from them.
  • 5) Capsule is then digested from the system.
  • 6) The recordings are then downloaded to a
    computer software from the belt.

Pros Cons
  • Identifies bleeding in the small bowel that can
    not be reach
  • High Resolution Images
  • There are no therapeutic capabilities for it.
  • Becoming impacted into a region due to
    inflammatory bowl disease, surgical adhesions
    etc.

Results
  • 22 Patients were tested
  • Capsule had a transit time of 257 minutes in the
    small intestine
  • Out of the 22 patients tested only 21 capsules
    were retrieved
  • Capsule were intact
  • Bleeding sites were identified in 11 of the
    patients
