Question?
  • How difficult is it to see underwater without a

  • Try to see if you can tell how much change is at
the bottom of the tank without a face mask.
  • Put on a face mask and try again, is it easier?
    Why?

History of Diving
  • 4500 years ago the ancient Greeks, using newly
developed glass, made facemasks and used them to
    dive for ornamental shells.

Diving Chamber
  • The diving chamber was a huge barrel that
contained a limited supply of air!
  • It was attached to a ship, limited movement.

6
Diving Suit
  • The Diving Suit (1873)was made of watertight
canvas and had a heavy metal helmet. Air was
pumped from the surface through a tube into the
    helmet.
  • Limited movement, still attached to the ship.

7
SCUBA
  • SCUBA- self contained underwater breathing
apparatus was developed by Jacques Cousteau and
his partner Emil Gagnan in 1942. It allowed for
    greater movement and freedom underwater.
