Title: Protecting our Fossil Fuels

1
Protecting our Fossil Fuels
2
What are Fossil Fuels?
  • Nonrenewable resources
  • Takes million of years to make
  • Provides 84 of our energy
  • Natural Gas, Coal, Petroleum Oil

3
Natural Gas
  • Used in heating and cooking (propane, methane
    gas)
  • Comes from the burned remains of marine organisms
which produced gas. Gas trapped by sands
    overtime.
  • Estimated to run out in 2075

4
Coal
  • Used to make electricity
  • Comes from the remains of plants
  • Expected to run out in 77 years

5
Petroleum Oil
  • Used to make gasoline, plastics, and paints
  • Comes from the remains of marine organisms
  • Estimated to run out in 47 years

6
Negative Effects of using Fossil Fuels
  • Hurts the environment (mining)
  • Creates air pollution (smog and acid rain)
  • Resources are running out and getting expensive

7
Alternatives to Fossil Fuels
  • Hydroelectric Power
  • comes from the use of water. As water falls,
    energy is created.
  • No air pollution, but can damage the environment
    through the building of dams

9
Alternatives to Fossil Fuels
  • Wind Power
  • As the wind blows, energy is created
  • No air pollution, but energy can only be created
when the wind blows hard enough to turn the
    windmills

10
Alternatives to Fossil Fuels
  • Solar Power
  • Uses the suns energy. Energy is stored in
    batteries for latter use.
  • Very expensive to produce large amounts of energy

11
Alternatives to Fossil Fuels
  • Geothermal Energy
  • Uses heat energy stored in the earths crust
  • Can only be used where natural geysers and
    volcanoes are located

12
Pollutants
  • Can be solid, liquid, or gas
  • Anything that contaminates or hurts the
    environment
