jobs requiring science, engineering, or technical
training will increase 24 between 2004 - 2014 to
6.3 million.
It is our responsibility to prepare our students
for the business and science of biotechnology.

  • Unpaid (minimum) 180 hr industry lab position
  • Biotechnology Independent Research (optional)
  • Mentor-guided, independent lab research

ROP Biotech Services Industry Internship
  • Students are placed into unpaid or paid lab
    internship
  • 60 hours of additional training before placement
  • Summer Internship 25-30 hrs/wk for 8 weeks
  • ROP provides Workmans Comp Liability Insurance
  • Many interns continue into employment

San Mateo County ROP Biotechnology Successes and
Accomplishments
  • Biotech Education National Model since 1994
  • Over 5,000 students have been trained in the
    SMCOE-ROP Biotechnology courses
  • Over 750 students have completed industry
    laboratory internships.
  • Formal and informal partnerships with over 25
    biotech companies and research institutions
    within a 30 min commute
  • Program is being duplicated at several CC/HS
    sites all over the country
  • Several regional and national awards
  • Working on articulation/alignment with local
    college programs
