Title: How to do a DBQ

1
How to do a DBQ
  • Nationalism

2
What a DBQ is
DBQ stands for Document Based Question. This
means that the question you will ultimately
answer at the end in essay form is based upon the
documents youre being given to work with. A DBQ
is just like a regular essay, except that youve
been given some materials to help support your
answer.
3
What a DBQ is not
  • DBQ is not simply a list of documents.
  • DBQ is not the answers to the scaffolding
    questions
  • DBQ is not BBQ misspelled.

4
Getting Started
First, lets look at the DBQ weve been assigned.
Just look at the first page and nothing else.
STOP LOOKING AT THE DOCUMENTS!!!!! I said the
first page and nothing else.
5
The first page
A basic description of what you will be asked to
do.
Part III DOCUMENT-BASED QUESTION This question is
based on the accompanying documents (17). The
question is designed to test your ability to work
with historical documents. Some of these
documents have been edited for the purposes of
this question. As you analyze the documents, take
into account the source of each document and
any point of view that may be presented in the
document. Historical Context Nationalism is a
powerful force that can have positive and
negative effects on nations and regions. Task
Using information from the documents and your
knowledge of global history, answer the questions
that follow each document in Part A. Your answers
to the questions will help you write the Part B

term nationalism Discuss how nationalism has
had positive and/or negative effects on
specific nations and/or regions Evaluate
whether nationalism in general has had a more
positive or a more negative impact on the people
of the world

Congratulations!
Well done, you correctly identified that little

regionS. Its obvious that you know the meaning
of that letter S and that when it appears at
the end of a word youll need to give more than
one example.

Your outline is done
Click here if you need to go back to copy
anything down.
Otherwise it is now time to move on. The next
step is to take a minute and try to answer the
questions on your own without even looking at the
documents. STOP THAT! I SAID DO NOT LOOK AT THE
DOCUMENTS. Go on to the next slide and follow
the directions.

Time to brainstorm
Brainstorming is taking a second to organize what
you know about a topic before moving on. This
essay wants you to focus on nationalism and its
positive and negative effects. Take a minute and
make a chart like the one below and fill it in as
much as you can in four minutes. MAKE SURE YOU
LABEL THE LIST, something like Brainstorming
list would be fine.
Elements of nationalism
Positive effects of nationalism
Negative effects of nationalism
Once youve completed your chart click here to
move on.
28
Brainstorm Chart
Hopefully you got a few things for each column.
In case you didnt Ill give you a couple now for
starters.
Elements of nationalism
Positive effects of nationalism
Negative effects of nationalism
  1. People who share common language, religion and
    history
  2. Common geography
  3. Unites people
  1. Brings countries together like Germany and Italy
  2. Helped keep the Jews united as a people
    throughout the centuries
  1. Can lead to racism (Holocaust, Arab-Israeli
    conflict)
  2. Can start wars (Franco-Prussian War, World War I)
  3. Can break up countries (Austria-Hungary)

Add my items to your list and click here to move
on.
29
Now you can look at the documents
(Well its about time this is a DBQ after all)
But before you do, one simple rule. Read
everything. The text introducing the document,
the document itself and that little line
underneath the document that tells you who wrote
the document and when. Read it all!

Document 1
. . . Therefore, if we so ardently desire the
emancipation unification of Italy if
we declare that in the face of this great
question all the petty questions that divide us
must be silenced it is not only that we may see
our country glorious and powerful but that above
all we may elevate her in intelligence and moral
development up to the plane of the most civilized
nations. . . . Camillo di Cavour, 1846
Question 1 1 According to Camillo di Cavour,
what would be one positive result of Italian
unification? 1
Click here if the answer is all the petty
questions would be silenced
Click here if the answer is Italy's intelligence
and moral development would be equal to that of
the most civilized nations.
Click here if the answer is that Italians would
have their own country.
31
Not bad, but answering a scaffolding question is
more than just picking out a piece of the
document to copy. Think about a possible answer
to the question and then look for that answer in
the document. Click here to go back to the
previous slide and read the task more carefully.
32
That is true, but look for something in the
document that will give Italians a reason to want
to unify.
Click here to go back to the previous slide.
33
Seldom wrong and right again!
Well done, you understood that Cavour was saying
that a unified Italy would take its rightful
place amongst the great nations of the world.
Now decide, is this document refers to a positive
effect of nationalism, an element of nationalism
or a negative effect of nationalism? Make your
decision and click below.

document this is.
34
If you said positive effect of nationalism

Cavour is speaking about the good things that
will happen to Italy so take a second and label
the document with the following note.

I dont know how you do it!
Well done, you correctly analyzed the two
pictures.

positive effect of nationalism, an element of
nationalism or a negative effect of nationalism?
Make your decision and click below.
Click here once youve assessed what type of a
document this is.
39
If you said both positive and negative effects of
nationalism
Yourrrrrrrrrrrrre rrrrrrrrrright!
The maps show opposite results of nationalism.
In Germany nationalism was clearly positive,
while the Austro-Hungarian Emperor would probably
think nationalism destroyed his Empire.

positive effect of nationalism, an element of
nationalism or a negative effect of nationalism?

Not bad, but I think you need to reread the
documents more carefully. Click here to go back

44
If you said elements of nationalism
Yourrrrrrrrrrrrre rrrrrrrrrright!
The two national anthems both express the desire
for self-determination by the Jewish and
Palestinian people based on their common land and
history.

4) Identify one expression of Chinese nationalism
in this passage.
Click here if you think the document expresses
Chinese nationalism by advocating (urging) the
killing of Christian converts.
Click here if you think the document expresses
Chinese nationalism by rejoicing in the common
language of the Chinese people.
Click here if you think the document expresses
Chinese nationalism by celebrating the common
cultural heritage of the Chinese.
46
Not bad, but I think you need to read the
document more carefully. Click here to go back
to the previous slide and read the task more
carefully.
47
Not bad, but I think you need to read the
document more carefully. The author does not
mention the common language of the Chinese.
Click here to go back to the previous slide and
read the task more carefully.
48
Go back and take another look. Read the document
more carefully. The author does not mention much
about the common heritage of the Chinese.
Click here to go back to the previous slide.
49
Are these questions too easy for you?
This was a tricky one. By advocating the killing
of Christian converts the author is appealing to
the common religion and ancestry of the Chinese
nation.
Now decide if these documents illustrate a
positive effect of nationalism, an element of
nationalism or a negative effect of nationalism?
Make your decision and click below.
Click here once youve assessed what type of a
document this is.
50
If you said elements of nationalism
Yourrrrrrrrrrrrre rrrrrrrrrright!
Even though you could say the killing of people
over religion is a negative expression of
nationalism (and youd be correct in saying that)
the author is using religion (an element of
nationalism) to create national unity. You can
use this document to illustrate either point,
however, it is intended to discuss the elements
of nationalism.

5) Based on the document, identify one criticism
Gandhi expressed about British rule.
Click here if you think Gandhi is saying that the
British are taking the resources of India
Click here if you think Gandhi is saying that
Britain has made a virtual slave out of India.
Click here if you think Gandhi is saying that he
is grateful for British rule.
52
Not bad, but I think you need to reread the
document more carefully. Your selection is
correct, but Gandhi does not mention resources in
the document.
53
You must have satellite T.V. up on that igloo of
yours!
Gandhi is listing many complaints against the
British, making India into a virtual slave is
just one. Gandhi also says British rule is
making India poor, the best government jobs go
only to the British and that the British are
disrespectful of the Indians amongst other things.
Now decide if this document illustrates a
positive effect of nationalism, an element of
nationalism or a negative effect of nationalism?

document this is.
54
Go back and take another look. Read the document
and the question more carefully.
Click here to go back to the previous slide.
55
If you said negative effect of nationalism
Yourrrrrrrrrrrrre rrrrrrrrrright!
Gandhi is an Indian living in India under British
rule he truly sees the dark underside of
imperialism and what it is like to live under the
rule of another nation.

6) According to these maps, how did nationalism
affect the continent of Africa between 1952 and
1975?
Click here if you think nationalism affected the
map of Africa because many nations changed their
national anthems between 1952 and 1975.
Click here if you think nationalism affected the
map of Africa by the removal of all of the
European languages
Click here if you think nationalism affected the
map of Africa by the removal of the European
powers and the independence of many new African
nations.
57
Be careful. Try to avoid answer using words like
always and never. Also there is no
information on the map specifically about
languages. Try again.
Click here to go back to the previous slide.
58
Not bad, it is true that many of the new (hint
keyword new) African nations changed their
national anthems, that information is not
available on the map. Reread the choices and
make a selection based upon the document.
59
Who cares about the rain, youre walking on
sunshine!
The end of European imperialism meant
independence for all the former colonies in
Africa. This map shows Africa prior to
de-colonization and its immediate results.
Now decide if this document illustrates a
positive effect of nationalism, an element of
nationalism or a negative effect of nationalism?
Make your decision and click below.
Click here once youve assessed what type of a
document this is.
60
If you said positive effect of nationalism
Yourrrrrrrrrrrrre rrrrrrrrrright!
The end of imperialism and the birth of all these
new nations in Africa is a good thing. Remember
one of the goals of nationalism is
self-determination.

nationalism or a negative effect of nationalism?
Make your decision and click below.
Click here once youve assessed what type of a

64
If you said negative effect of nationalism
Yourrrrrrrrrrrrre rrrrrrrrrright!
Nationalism has created ethnic conflicts through
out the world. Document seven lists only a
handful of the ethnic conflicts and it only
scratches the surface of the causes of those
conflicts.
Document 7 Negative effect of nationalism
Click here once youve labeled the document to

65
Youre done with the Docs.
Before you say good-bye to the document package,
lets just make sure youve done everything you
were supposed to do
Noted each document as a positive effect, a
negative effect or element of nationalism. Answer
ed all of the scaffolding questions.
This is no time for a picnic, weve still got
work to do!
66
Were almost ready to write
Now take out the outside information
brainstorming list we made before. It should
look something like this.
Elements of nationalism
Positive effects of nationalism
Negative effects of nationalism
  1. People who share common language, religion and
    history
  2. Common geography
  3. Unites people
  1. Brings counties together like Germany and Italy
  2. Helped keep the Jews united as a people
    throughout the centuries
  1. Can lead to racism (Holocaust, Arab-Israeli
    conflict)
  2. Can start wars (Franco-Prussian War, World War I)
  3. Can break up countries (Austria-Hungary)

67
Update your Brainstorm Chart
1 Take out all those notes you made on the
documents and add them where they belong. (for
example click here)

68
Update your Brainstorm Chart 2
However now we have to cross off our old 3 under
Elements of nationalism unless we can make it
more specific because our new 3 under Positive
effects of nationalism covers it. Take a minute
and update your chart using the information from
the documents.

I said update your chart
And I meant it, sure you could just click the
button and move ahead to the next slide, but what
would you really learn? Use this opportunity.
Make your own list, then click ahead and compare
your list to the one that I came up with. Once
youre really sure that youve completed your
brainstorming chart click the link at the bottom
of the page.
When youre ready click here to move on.
70
Your new brainstorm list should look like this
Doesnt look like we did too well with the
brainstorming. All were left with is the
definition of nationalism (Elements 1) and the
fact that nationalism has started wars like the
Franco-Prussian War (Negative 2). Hopefully you
put down some other information on your own.
71
Were almost there
