Plot (definition)
  • Plot is the organized pattern or sequence of
events that make up a story. Every plot is made
up of a series of incidents that are related to
    one another.

4
1. Exposition
  • This usually occurs at the beginning of a short
story. Here the characters are introduced. We
also learn about the setting of the story. Most
importantly, we are introduced to the main
    conflict (main problem).

5
2. Rising Action
  • This part of the story begins to develop the
conflict(s) and adds complications to the plots
problem(s). A building of interest or suspense
    occurs.

6
3. Climax
  • This is the turning point of the story. Usually
the main character comes face to face with a
conflict. The main character will change in some
way. This is the point of greatest emotional
    intensity or suspense.

7
4. Falling Action
  • All loose ends of the plot are tied up. The
conflict(s) and climax are taken care of.

8
5. Resolution
  • The story comes to a reasonable ending. Reveals
    or suggest outcome of conflict

SETTING
  • Setting is a term referring to the time and
location in which a story takes place. The term
is relevant for various forms of literary
expression, such as short stories, novels,
    dramas, and screenplays.

11
CONFLICT
  • THE STRUGGLE BETWEEN 2 OPPOSING FORCES
  • Internal Conflict- exists within the mind of a
character who is torn between two opposing forces
    within himself (conscience)
  • External Conflict- Occurs when a character
struggles with a force outside of himself
    (society)

12
THEME
  • Is a broad idea in a story, or a message or
lesson conveyed by a work. This message is
usually about life, society or human nature.
  • Most themes are implied rather than explicitly
stated. Themes arise from the interplay of plot,
    setting, character, conflict, and tone.
