Finding the Smallpox Scabs

• Mitty has a biology paper to write
• Finds an old medical textbook in his families
  weekend house
• There is an envelope that has Scabs- VM
  epidemic, 1902, Boston written on it.
• Inside are scabs

Variola Major

• Mitty looks up Variola Major on the Internet
• Finds out that Variola Major is the virus that
  causes smallpox
• He begins his research on smallpox for his paper.

Researching Smallpox

• You do not feel sick for 12-14 days
• Headache, shivering, backache, pustules on the
  skin
• Smallpox was eradicated

Using disease for Terrorism

• Mittys friend Derek is researching anthrax
• They are talking about the possibility of
  diseases for terrorism
• Forshadows later events in the book

Mitty Begins to think he has Smallpox

• After researching the disease, Mitty begins to
  believe that he has smallpox
• He contacts many different organizations on the
  internet
• Some of the responses are calm, but others sound
  worried and urge him to call a medical hotline

Mitty Runs Away

• Mitty experiences symptoms which he thinks are
  smallpox related
• He runs away to protect people from the disease
• Is thinking about suicide

Mitty is Kidnapped by Terrorists

• Mitty is kidnapped and held in a basement
  somewhere
• He puts spots all over his skin with dirt in the
  basement to trick the terrorists into thinking he
  actually has smallpox

Mitty Escapes from the Terrorists

• Mitty was able to break the gas furnace in the
  basement which produced carbon monoxide after
  trapping the terrorists in the basement with him.
• When another terrorist opens the door and comes
  down, Mitty gets out and locks the door on them

Ending

• All of the terrorists died
• Mitty did not get smallpox
