3
Introduction
  • Accident can be defined as something going
    wrong unexpectedly.
  • Physical examples include an unavoidable
collision (including a person or object falling
    by chance).

4
Introduction
  • The term is also loosely applied to mean any
undesirable outcome, even if it could have been
avoided, such as getting injured by touching
    something sharp, hot, electrically live,
ingesting poisons, or other injuries caused by
    lack of ordinary precautions.

5
Types of Construction Accidents
  • 1- Fall from Heights
  • 2- Struck-By
  • 3- Electrical Incidents
  • 4- Trenching and Excavation

6
Common Types of Construction Accidents
7
Cases of Construction Accident
  • Some construction accident cases were
    studied and analysed.

8
Worker Plunges To Death From 12th Floor of
Building
  • A worker died on the spot after falling from
the 12th floor of a building at a construction
site in Al Nahda. A carpenter fell from the
building after slipping off the edge of the 12th
    floor.

9
Worker Plunges To Death From 12th Floor of
Building
  • The on-site foreman said that the worker fell
after losing his balance as he was feeling dizzy,
and it may be a heatstroke who cause the worker
    to feel dizzy and fall.
  • Another obvious reason could be that it was the
    lack of safety equipments/fall protection
equipment such as safety belt, which the worker
should wear when he works in high or elevated
    places.

Fall Protection Equipments Used In Foreign
Countries
  • 1- Guard rails.
  • 2- Safety net.
  • 3- Fall arrest system.

Fatalities In Dubai Airport Collapse
  • A wall has collapsed at Dubai's airport
construction site, killing at least five workers
and injuring many more (September 2004).
  • A large partition in a building under
    construction collapsed, the contractor said.
About 150 workers were on site when the partition
    fell.
  • At least five people were killed on the spot
    and some died in hospital.

18
Fortune Tower Construction Accident
  • Four construction workers were killed and 67
were injured when a fire engulfed a high rise
building under construction on Shaikh Zayed Road,
    opposite Dubai Marina (January, 2007).

20
The Fortune Tower Incident
  • A 22-year old Indian worker standing at the
bottom of the fortune tower. The iron rod
apparently fell from the 25th floor of the
building site and entered the victim from the
back and exited from this pelvis. The rod was
2.5M long and 18 mm thick.
  • The bar had severed the coronary artery,
    resulting in severe internal bleeding"

Design Data (Entry Sheet)
  • Date of accident
  • Time of accident
  • Name of worker
  • Nationality
  • Type of accident
  • Description of the injury
  • Is there any equipment involved?
  • Was there any tools? What kind of tools?
  • Was the accident caused by other worker?
  • Was there any negligence? By whom?
  • The severity of the injuries. Minor, medium,
    severe
  • The procedure that was followed (Call ambulance,
Call police, Notify supervisor, is there a first
    aid kit?)

29
Objectives of the Database
  • Collecting data to analyze trends.
  • Designing a reporting tool (Automated Accident
    Reporting Tool database).

About Database
  • In design process, there are many features we
    need
  • Database capabilities ( record keeping)
  • Web integration capabilities
  • Graph, chart capabilities.
  • Also many programs to use
  • Microsoft visual web developer
  • Microsoft Access
  • Visual Basic

37
About Database
  • Database
  • Is a collection of information organized in
  • such a way that a computer program can quickly
    select
  • desired pieces of data.
  • Microsoft Access
  • Is a computer application used to create and
    manage computer
  • based databases on desktop computers and/or on
    connected
  • computers (a network)

38
Procedure To Follow
39
Definitions Related To Database
What is a table A table holds data about a
particular item, such as products or
suppliers. What is a record A record is a
collection of information that relates to a
particular item within that data base table. Each
item within a record is called a field.
40
Definitions Related To Database
What is a field Fields are the individual item
that makes up a record within the data base.
41
Definitions Related To Database
What is field data types A field must have a
specific data type format. The data types that
are available within Microsoft Access, including
text, number, currency, Date/time, yes/no, etc.
42

Table of the Company
43
Designing Queries
  • What is a Queries?
  • In normal English, a query is a question.
  • Objective of queries
  • The main objective of the query is to let the
user choose his own result for example to see
what is the most type of accident happened so
that he could find where is the problem and try
to find solution for the problem.

44
Types of Queries
  • There are five types of queries which are
  • Select query This is the simplest type of query
    you can create.
  • Action query This query performs an action on
the data retrieved. For instance, the query could
create a new table and move records to it.
  • Crosstab query. This query presents information
in a spreadsheet-like manner similar to the
    Datasheet.
  • Parameter query This query works in conjunction
    with other types of queries.
  • SQL query To formulate some types of queries,
you must use SQL (structured query language).

45
Creating A Simple Query
  • To create a simple query, select this option from
    the New Query dialog box
  • Access then displays the Simple Query Wizard
    dialog box shown in Figure.

46
Example of The Queries
47
Designing Report
  • Report is simply another part of the database.

48
Creating A Report
  • To start the Report Wizard, First,
double-click your mouse on the Create Report By
Using Wizard option. Access displays the Report
    Wizard dialog box.

49
Specifying The Report Layout
  • Using the dialog box shown in the Figure
below, we can indicate different options for
laying out our report. The option buttons in the
    dialog box control different layouts.

Query/Specific Data Report (Example )
  • Examples of some queries we designed, they
might be not the best quires available but these
are for instruction purposes. We could design
more according to what is needed.

60
Application For This Database Or Accident
Reporting Tool
  • Ministry of Labours (MOL).
  • Easy to model data.
  • Easier standard format and easier to report
    accident.
  • Create and measure safety performance for
    contractor.
  • Contractor.
  • Easy to report.
  • Easy to keep record and get his performance.

61
Conclusion
  • Analyzed some cases of construction accident.
  • Studied each case and classified them by the
types of accidents. Also reviewed and analyzed
the accident reporting format in UAE especially
    in the ministry of labour.

62
Conclusion
  • Designing Accident reporting tool (Automated
Accident Reporting Tool) that is capable of
    compiling accident reports and summarizing
    accident data.
  • The data are vital to help the ministry of labour
to take key decisions related to the safety and
identify major problem areas that need solutions.
  • The tool could be improved further to accommodate
requirements by the ministry of labor.

63
Recommendations
  • Creating special authority for the safety and
health in the UAE and it will be under the
    Ministry of Labor.
  • If we continue on this subject first we will go
through the survey and distribute it then we will
analyze the survey and try to find solutions for
    the problem.
  • Also we can improve our accident reporting tool
to accommodate the requirements of the Ministry
    of Labor.

64
Whats Next?
  • Presentation to the Ministry of Labor
  • Further refinements and improvements
