DEFINITION
  • Exhumation means the lawful disinterment or
  • digging out a body, which
  • has already been buried ,from a grave.

OBJECTIVES
  • 1-for purposes of identification
  • 2-to determine the cause of death , when foul
    play is suspected.
  • e.g. homicide,disputed case of death or
    poisoning ,exhumation post-mortem is done to
    know cause , manner nature of death
  • 3-may also be required to recover some paper or
    documents or other evidential material buried
    with dead body

RULES
  • Done under written order of district magistrate
  • Exhumed by police in presence revenue officer
    a medical officer
  • In India ,no time limit is fixed

IDENTIFICATION OPENING THE GRAVE
  • Grave identified by warden of cemetery from the
    records , exact site by friends relatives who
    have been present at the time of burial
  • Now the grave is dug up carefully to avoid damage
    to the coffin its content
  • In suspected case of mineral poisoning about 500
    gram of sample of earth in actual contact with
    coffin should be collected preserved in a dry
    clean glass bottle for chemical analysis.
  • Control samples at some distance from the coffin
    should be taken

IDENTIFICATION OF THE COFFIN BODY
  • Now the coffin should be raised from the grave
    identified by original undertaker who made it
    as many persons possible.
  • An attempt is then made to identify the body by
    any person who was present when body was placed
    in the coffin.
  • If a body is buried illegally it is invariably in
    a shallow grave liable to greater decomposition
    depending on weather.

EXAMINATION
  • -if interment has been recent then post mortem is
    carried in usual manner
  • In case of bodies which has been underground for
    a sufficiently long time undergone
    putrefaction, an attempt should be made to
    determine
  • - sex
  • - stature
  • - marks of identification

  • Hairs found on body should be preserved in a
    dry clean glass bottle for subsequent
    identification chemical analysis.
  • A search should also be made for recent or old
    injuries such as fractures
  • All the cavities should be examined as many
    viscera as can be obtained , should be preserved
  • In case of suspected mineral poisoning such as
    arsenic antimony hairs, nails long bone
    should be preserved.
  • Sample then forwarded duly labeled sealed to
    forensic science laboratory.

TIME FOR EXHUMATION
  • In India England no time limit is fixed for
    disinterment of body
  • In France period is limited to 10 years in
  • Germany 30 years.
