Alkaline Earth Metals

2
Types of Alkaline Earth Metals
  • Beryllium ............... Be
  • Magnesium ............... Mg
  • Calcium ............... Ca
  • Strontium ............... Sr
  • Radium ............... Ra

3
Beryllium
  • A chemical element of atomic number 4. Beryllium
    is a hard gray metal.
  • It is found in beryl, beryllium is found in the
    mineral bertrandite
  • Symbols are Be

4
Magnesium
  • Magnesium is a ductile, silver-white, chemically
active metal with a hexagonal close-packed
    crystalline structure.
  • It is found in large deposits of magnesite,
    dolomite, and other minerals.
  • Symbols are Mg

5
Calcium
  • It is the third most common metal on Earth,
exceeded only by iron and aluminum, and the fifth
    most common element.
  • The principle sources of calcium are limestone
    and dolomite.
  • it is found in almost every terrestrial area in
    the world.
  • Symbols are Ca

6
Strontium
  • a soft silver-white or yellowish metallic element
that is highly reactive chemically. The metal
turns yellow when exposed to air.
  • Found deep below or in Earth's crust
  • Symbol is Sr

7
Radium
  • Radium preparations are remarkable for
maintaining themselves at a higher temperature
than their surroundings, and for their
    radiations.
  • Radium is only found in trace amounts in uranium
ore. It is not a stable element, so it cannot be
found by itself like other elements
  • Symbol is Ra
  • When freshly prepared, pure radium metal is
brilliant white, but blackens when exposed to air.

8
Barium
  • it reacts with water and carbon dioxide and is
    not found as a mineral.
  • Barium compounds impart a green color to flames
and have been used in fireworks. Barium sulfate
is used for its heaviness, insolubility, and
    X-ray opacity.
  • Symbol is Ba
  • found in the Earths crust, but not in the
elemental form as they are so reactive. Instead,
they are widely distributed in rock structures.

About Alkaline Earth Metals
  • Alkaline Earth Metals can only be found in or
    below the earth's crust.
  • The alkaline earth elements are metallic elements
found in the second group of the periodic table.
  • Because of their reactivity, the alkaline metals
are not found free in nature.

12
Using Alkaline Earth Metals Safely
  • This specific group in the periodic table owes
its name to their oxides that simply give basic
    alkaline solutions.
  • These elements melt at such high temperature
that they remain solids (earths) in fires.
  • alkaline earth metals provide a good example of
group trends in properties in the periodic table,
    with well-characterized similar behaviors down
    the group.
