Title: Golgi Apparatus

1
Golgi Apparatus
  • By Jackie Crozier and Christie Smicherko

2
Functions
  • The functions of the Golgi Apparatus are
processing, packaging, and storing products of
the cell so that they can be delivered to the
cell membrane for release from the cell.

3
Structure
  • The front of the Golgi Apparatus is called the
    cis face
  • Usually located by the rear ER.
  • The back of the Golgi Apparatus is called the
    trans face.
  • Usually located by the secretory vesicles.
  • Cisternae make up most of the Golgi apparatus

4
Processes of the Cis and Trans Face
  • Vesicles fuse with the cis face, causing them to
empty their contents into the Golgi apparatus.
  • Molecules pass through the Golgi Apparatus and
are discharged in the sensory vesicles.

5
Inside the Golgi
  • Proteins and lipids made in the ER membranes are
transported to the Golgi, and modified as they
    pass through it.
  • The most common alteration is the change or
modification of short sugar chains, forming
    glycoproteins and glycolipids.

6
Cisternae
  • Flattened, stacked membrane folds in the Golgi
body, where newly formed glycolipids and
    glycoproteins are collected.
  • A typical Golgi can have anywhere from 6-8
    cisternae stacked onto each other

7
Diseases
  • Alzheimers Disease
  • Changes in the Golgi size
  • There is not a lot of information at this time
because scientists are not completely sure how
    this disease works.

8
Malfunctions
  • Compounds cannot be transported to outside of the
    cell

9
Random Facts
  • Because of its size, it was one of the first
organelles discovered and observed in detail
  • Discovered in 1897 by Camillo Golgi
  • Found in most eukaryotic cells

10
Question 1
  • True or False
  • The front membrane of the Golgi Apparatus is
    called the trans face?
  • False
  • It is called the cis face.

11
Question 2
  • What materials are passed through the Golgi?
  • Proteins and lipids
  • Lipids and carbohydrates
  • Enzymes and proteins
  • Carbohydrates and proteins
  • Answer
  • A. Proteins and Lipids
  • Because they enter the Golgi unmodified and they
    leave the Golgi modified.
