Title: BLUE WHALES

1
BLUE WHALES
  • Some fantastic facts about the worlds largest
    creatures.
  • Students of the
    10th form
  • Teacher
    Levkovich E.V. Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

2
  • The blue whale is the largest mammal in the world
and the largest animal ever known to have lived
    on our planet.

3
  • Its six times longer than a giraffe.

4
  • Its heart is as large as a car.

5
  • Its tongue along can weigh as much as an
    elephant.

6
  • Female blue whales are larger than males. They
can be more than 80 metres long and weigh 200
    tons.

7
  • Baby whales weigh is about two tons when they are
born and gain about 90 kilograms every day during
the first year of their lives.

8
  • The blue whale was named for its colour, a
bluish-grey, that looks true blue under the water
    and greyish on the surface.

9
  • Blue whales live in all the worlds oceans. They
often spend summers in polar waters and migrate
towards the Equator when winter arrives. They
often swim in small groups or alone.

10
  • Blue whales are able to breathe air, but they are
very comfortable in the ocean water.

11
  • Blue whales prefer to swim slowly, but they can
reach speeds of over 30 kilometres an hour.

12
  • These giant creatures feed on tiny shrimplike
animals called krill. An adult blue whale can eat
4 tons of krill a day.

13
  • Blue whales are among the worlds longest-lived
animals. They can live to be about 110 years old.

14
  • Blue whales are among the loudest animals on the
planet. Their calls are so loud that they can
hear each other up to 1600 kilometres away.
However, some of their loud sounds are so low in
frequency that people cannot hear them without
special equipment. Scientists think that blue
whales use these calls to communicate with each
    other.

15
  • Only a few thousand blue whales are believed to
swim the worlds oceans. They are one of the most
endangered species in the world. They were hunted
for many years for their oil, and they were
    almost hunted to extinction.

16
  • In 1929 and 1930, for example, whalers managed to
    kill 30000 Antarctic blue whales.

17
  • The mammals became a protected species in the
1960s. Today, they seem to be growing in numbers.
But although its good news, scientists know,
theyre not out of danger yet.
