Tyco Brahe
  • By Nicole Busa and Katie Nickerson

?Loca Vida!
  • Born December 14, 1546
  • Died October 24, 1601
  • Country of Birth Denmark

3
Geocentric Model
  • The geocentric model of our solar system is
constructed of a series of planets and the sun
that orbit the Earth which is the center.
  • Tyco believed the geocentric model was correct in
that he thought that the Earth was too slow to be
in constant motion orbiting the sun. This
resulted in him believing the Earth was the
    center of our solar system.

4
Heliocentric Model
  • The Heliocentric Model contains the sun in the
middle of our solar system, and the rest of the
    planets orbit around it.
  • Tyco believed that this model was correct,
because he thought that the planets orbited the
sun. In his case though, all of them except for
    the Earth.

5
Tycos Final Model
  • His final model (now known as Tycoism) consisted
of the five planets orbiting the sun, and the sun
orbiting the Earth. This model is also known as
the geo-heliocentric model which was originally
    proposed by Heraclides not Tyco.

6
Supernova
  • He discovered the first supernova- the SN 1572.
At first he thought it was a planet, but later
saw that it was not moving. He concluded that it
was a fixed star and described it as nova. Then
later he wrote a book call the De nova stella.

Comets
  • He made prediction charts about births, weather,
and astronomical events. One of these was the
    comet of 1577.
  • He also proved that comets were not in our or any
other planets atmosphere, but actually in space
    itself.

8
Why important?
  • His discoveries about comets and supernovae were
important because they proved, contrary to the
beliefs at the time, that space was not fixed
or unchanging, but that objects moved throughout
it. This was a new idea.

9
Mind Blowing Facts
  • His discovery of the supernova influenced Edgar
    Allan Poes poem Al Aaraaf.
  • The King of Denmark and Norway, King Frederick
II, offered Tyco an island Hven (a small island
located on the strait between Denmark and
Sweden.) and funding to build an observatory for
him there. He ended up taking this offer.
  • He became the imperial astronomer when he moved
to Prague in 1597 invited by the Holy Roman
    emperor Rudolph II.
  • When Tyco was 20, studying at the University of
Rostock in Germany, he got part of his nose cut
off in a duel with another nobleman, Manderup
Parsbjerg. He later got a replacement made of
gold and silver. This is what influenced his
    curiosity in medicine and alchemy.

did not believe was correct.
