  • Literally means rebirth
  • Re-interest in Greek and Roman literature and art
  • Began in Italy in the 14th century
  • Some Renaissance artists include
  • Christopher Marlowe, Edmond Spenser, Miguel de
    Cervantes, Michelangelo, El Greco, and William
    Byrd

  • Queen Elizabeth I
  • ruled from 1558 to 1603
  • The Queen was a great patron of the arts
  • Sponsored Shakespeare, Ben Johnson,
  • Christopher Marlowe
  • Inspired Spensers poem The Faerie Queen
  • Many musical works and dances were created under
    her rule as well

Shakespeares Life
  • Born in Stratford-upon-Avon in April, 1564
  • Father-John Shakespeare-local glover and merchant
  • Mother- Mary Arden-local landed heiress
  • Attended a local grammar school where he learned
    Latin and Greek
  • Shakespeare never received a University education
  • This has led to doubts over the authorship of
    many of his works

  • Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway on November
    28th, 1582
  • Anne was 26 at the time and pregnant
  • The couple had three children-Susanna, Hamnet,
    and Judith
  • Hamnet died at the age of 11 in 1596

  • Very little is known of Shakespeares life from
    1585-1592 The Lost Years
  • However, he reappears in London in 1592 as an
    established actor in Pembrokes Men, and The Lord
    Chamberlains Men
  • He performed many times in front of Queen
    Elizabeth I while with The Lord Chamberlains Men
  • He died in 1616 and was buried in the Holy
    Trinity Church in Stratford
  • His First Folio was published posthumously in
    1623

The Globe
  • Built around 1594 in the Bankside District of
    London
  • One of four main theaters in the area
  • Along with the Rose, the Hope, and the Swan
  • Open-air, octagonal amphitheater
  • Three stories tall
  • Held up to 3,000 audience members
  • Stage was 43x28

The Globe Continued
  • The original Globe burned down in 1613 during a
    production of Henry VIII
  • It was rebuilt and continued operations until the
    Puritans shut it down in 1642
  • The foundations were found in 1989 and a new
    Globe was built on the spot
  • Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the theater
    in 1997 with a production of Henry V

possible after the original

  • Shakespeares plays appeared in theaters around
    1592
  • Some of the earliest include Henry VII, Part
    I,II,III and Titus Andronicus
  • Other famous plays include Romeo and Juliet,
    Hamlet, Othello, Henry V, A Midsummer Nights
    Dream, and Twelfth Night
  • Such famous Elizabethan actors as Richard Burbage
    and William Kemp were frequent players in
    Shakespeares company

  • Numerous movie versions and reproductions have
    been produced over the years
