Title: Having been turned down by his own country several times Ferdinand Magellan went to Spain to seek support for a western voyage for the spice Islands.
1Ferdinand Magellan
- Having been turned down by his own country
several times Ferdinand Magellan went to Spain to
seek support for a western voyage for the spice
Islands. - Due to Portuguese control of the trade route
around the Cape of Good Hope and the Treaty of
Tordesillas the Spanish were more willing to fund
such an expedition to catch up with their
neighboring trade rival. - Magellan received the support he needed from
Spain yet there was always a degree of mistrust
due to Magellans Portuguese birth.
2The Treaty of Tordesillas was designed to settle
land disputes between the two ocean going
European powers of Spain and Portugal not long
after Columbus return from the new world.

3The Voyage
Magellan left Seville Spain with 5 ships and 237
men.
Africa
Magellan arrived at Cape Verde having to imprison
one of his ships captain who was planning to
mutiny. The five ships set sail across the
Atlantic on November, 27 1519.
4The fleet sights South America on December 6, but
Magellan does not make landfall in Brazil.
Magellan leaves the sight of land believing like
Columbus that the earth was much smaller than it
is. His crew spends nearly three months at sea.
Port St. Juan
Magellan and his three ships reach a new ocean.
They call it the Pacific because it seems calm
compared to the rough Atlantic.
Magellan finally reaches the strait which will
bear his name. One ship had wrecked and sunk
while another slipped away back to Spain.
After a long and severe storm Magellan decided to
set up camp for the winter, they called it Port
St. Juan.
5The Philippines
The last surviving ship (the Victoria) arrives in
Cape Verde 13 men are left behind to save the 26
tons of spices on board.
The two ships under the command of Sebastian del
Cano (115 men) reach the spice islands and
successfully trade. One of the boats is badly in
need of repair so it stays behind while the other
sails on to Spain
Magellan and his three ships reached the
Philippines, 98 days after leaving South America.
After almost three years of travel 18 of the
original 237 men arrive in Spain. A small profit
was made from the venture.
6Magellan's Mutiny
- While at camp at Port St. Julian Magellan cut
rations to conserve food, this combined with a
growing general dissatisfaction with the
expedition caused several crew members to plot
against Magellan. - The captain which Magellan had arrested near the
beginning of the journey had recruited other
captains to overthrow their Portuguese commander.
- Magellan caught wind of the treachery and took
immediate measures along with loyal seamen to
re-take his vessels. - Those who mutinied were either tortured,
executed, marooned, or forced into hard labor.
