Title: The Element Bromine

1
The Element Bromine
  • The History and Uses of Bromine
  • Samantha Brunner
  • Chemistry Period 1

2
The History of Bromine
  • Bromine came from the Greek word meaning
    stench.
  • Was discovered in 1826 by two scientists named
A.J. Balard (France) and K. Lowig (Germany).
  • K. Lowig took a liquid to a lab and concluded
that the red color resulted from the mixture with
    chlorine.

3
Physical Properties
  • Red liquid with an unpleasant smell to it.
  • Very reactive
  • Melting Point- 265.9K
  • Boiling Point- 331.93K
  • Has 7 valence electrons

4
Uses of Bromine
  • People in the Victorian era drank a potion
containing a compound of Bromine to help them
    sleep.
  • Is used in leaded fuel and is best known for its
use as silver bromide in photograph papers.
  • Also used as pesticides, flame-retardants, water
    purification manufacture of ethylene dibromide,
    bleaching, pharmaceuticals, and shrink proofing
    wool.

5
Hazards of Bromine
  • Bromine is slightly toxic
  • Very corrosive
  • Exposure to the vapors cause painful irritation
to eyes and inflammation of the respiratory
    tract.
  • Bromine intake leads to depression and loss of
    weight.
  • Also attacks the skin and other tissues to
    produce irritation and necrosis.

6
Where Can You Find Bromine?
  • Bromine can be found in kelp, shellfish, and sea
    mollusc murex.
  • The murex was used to make a purple dye which was
    a compound of bromine.

7
Chemical Properties
  • Highly reactive with other elements due to the
fact that it wants to gain 8 valence electrons to
    become a noble gas.
  • Bromine belongs to the Halogen Family.
  • Bromine is in Period 4.

8
